"Rural Noir" Just Moved to Town

"Rural Noir" Just Moved to Town 1-31-17
Example of "Rural Noir"
There’s a new genre in town! NoveList has introduced “rural noir.” You may know it as grit lit, hick lit, rough South, dirty South, country noir or hillbilly noir. Whatever the term, rural noir is about the raw, gritty nature of both the writing and the subject matter.

“Meth labs and mountain men.  Trailer parks and teen pregnancies.  These are some of the hallmarks of rural noir…Their stories capture the hardscrabble lives of working class men and women and the harsh realities of rural life, in the South and beyond.” (Susan Brown,NoveList 2017)

Sound interesting?  You might want to read Where All Light Tends to Go by David Joy, or try entering the genre “rural noir” in the NoveList Plus advanced search and choose a title from there.

Tax Forms Have Begun to Arrive

It's that time of the year when tax forms from the IRS begin to arrive.  So far we have received forms and instruction books for 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ.

Publication 17 "Tax Guide for Individuals 2016" is available for use in the library. This publication covers the general rules for filing a federal income tax return. It supplements the information contained in your tax form instructions. It explains the tax law to make sure you pay only the tax you owe and no more.

You can find all IRS forms, publications, and instructions on their website at IRS.gov/forms. These items may be viewed, downloaded to your computer or device, or printed.
Forms and publications for screen readers and Braille output are also available.

Forms can also be ordered and delivered by mail.  Go to IRS.gov/orderforms to place an order online, or call 1-800-829-3676.  For TTY/TDD accessibility, call 1-800-829-4059.

Happy 300th Birthday to the NH State Library!

Today, January 25, 2017 marks the 300th birthday of our State Library! (Cue the "Happy Birthday" song.) In celebration of this momentous occasion, Gov. Sununu proclaimed 2017 "New Hampshire State Library Year," and throughout the year the State Library will post 300 "fun facts" about the itself and the history of NH libraries.

Where did the State Library get its start?

"New Hampshire is known for being first for many things: we hold the First in the Nation Primary, we ratified the first state constitution, founded the first public library in the United States and more. But you might not know that we also were the first state in America to have a State Library.

On January 25, 1717 in Portsmouth, the Twenty-Seventh General Assembly “voted that ye Law books be distributed among ye severall towns of this Province in proportion according to their last Prov. tax, except two books which shall be for ye use of ye Govr & Councile and house of representatives.” This law – made when New Hampshire was still part of England and almost 60 years before there even was a United States – makes it clear that the members of the provincial government knew that libraries are vital places of information and need to be a cornerstone of how we go about our business.

The “Law books” set aside for elected officials were the beginnings of the New Hampshire State Library, and they began a long history of libraries in New Hampshire communities: Peterborough is the first library in the country supported by public funds; “social libraries,” where members shared books and paid dues, flourished across the state in the early 1800s; philanthropists funded many public libraries – both the buildings and what went into them – a hundred years later. Soon, every city and town in New Hampshire had a library, proof that our citizens valued libraries as integral facets of our communities." (excerpt from OP-ED
"In 2017, celebrate another First in the Nation for NH" by Michael York, State Librarian)

What’s Your Reading Goal for 2017?

What’s Your Reading Goal for 2017? | 1-25-17
At the start of a new year, articles on New Year’s resolutions abound and readers aren’t left out.  Google “2017 ‘reading goals’” and you’ll get 225,000 results. Change that to “2017 ‘reading challenge’” and you’ll find 6 million results.  Links take you to places like GoodReads, BookRiot, and BetterWorld Books.  Suggestions range from simply setting a number goal to monthly themes and the more lofty checklists designed to encourage you to become a broader reader.

I log everything I read on LibraryThing, so I took a look at the 53 books I read in 2016.  Thirty-two percent were audiobooks, which I highly recommend, and 16% were ebooks.  Ninety-four percent were fiction—no surprise there.  Only 15% were mystery, which did surprise me.  And 47% were new-to-me authors, another surprise.

Based on this analysis, I am setting a goal of doubling my non-fiction reading.  I think my best chance of reaching this goal is to concentrate on memoirs.  I’m also going to pull from BookRiot’s ReadHarder list and set a goal to read: (1) an all-ages comic/graphic novel (by the way, one title on their list doubles as a memoir—score!); (2) a book I’ve read before; and (3) a LGBQT+ romance novel.

So, what’s your reading goal for 2017? Whether you have a simple goal or a convoluted goal, we’d love to hear it!

Kid's Book Group Reads Sleeper for February 15th

Kid's Book Group Reads "Sleeper" for February 15, 2017
Book Bunch reads Sheep by Valerie Hobbs for their meeting on Wednesday, February 15th.  Join the group at 4:00PM for a discussion of the book and a short activity.

Copies of the book are available in the Young Readers' Room.

About the Book
The sheep closed in around him like a big, woolly blanket. The puppy had never been so scared or so excited in his life. Soon he was racing, feinting, dodging—learning what it means to be one of the proud breed of Border collies, the finest sheepherders in the world. Then, almost overnight, his life is turned upside down. He finds himself in a series of strange places, with no sheep, his family gone. With nothing but the courage he was born with and a dream, he searches for the life he once knew, gathering names and adventures as he goes. For a short time, he's called Blackie. To the Goat Man, he's Shep. To Hollerin, he's Spot. There's one name that threatens to haunt him forever—Sparky, the name Billy the circus man calls him. But there's another name that he is given, one that finally makes him feel at home...

Adult Book Group Reads The Widow for February 1st or 3rd

Adult Book Group Reads "The Widow" for February 1st or 3rd, 2017Fiona Barton's The Widow is the chosen title for All Booked Up’s discussion on Wednesday, February 1st at 6:30PM or Friday, February 3rd at 1:00PM.  Copies of the book are available in the upper level “New” room.

About the Book
Following the twists and turns of an unimaginable crime, The Widow is an electrifying debut thriller that will take you into the dark spaces that exist between a husband and a wife.
There’s a lot Jean hasn’t said over the years about the crime her husband was suspected of committing. She was too busy being the perfect wife, standing by her man while living with the accusing glares and the anonymous harassment.

Now her husband is dead, and there’s no reason to stay quiet. There are people who want to hear her story. They want to know what it was like living with that man. She can tell them that there were secrets. There always are in a marriage.

The truth—that’s all anyone wants. But the one lesson Jean has learned in the last few years is that she can make people believe anything…

January's Book of the Month is My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry

January 2017's Book of the Month is "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry"
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Swedish author Fredrik Backman is our featured title for January. Copies are available in the “New” room on the upper level of the library.

About the Book
Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy—as in standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-strangers crazy. She is also Elsa’s best, and only, friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother’s stories, in the Land-of-Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

When Elsa’s grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsa’s greatest adventure begins. Her grandmother’s instructions lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and old crones but also to the truth about fairy tales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry is told with the same comic accuracy and beating heart as Fredrik Backman’s bestselling debut novel, A Man Called Ove. It is a story about life and death and one of the most important human rights: the right to be different.

Downloadable Magazine Subscriptions Expiring

If you enjoy our downloadable magazine service through OverDrive, you need to be aware that OverDrive must separate ways with provider Barnes & Noble.

What this means for you:  Many, many tiles are expiring next week and will no longer be available for download. (See list below) The remainder will expire in March.

What this means moving forward: OverDrive is hard at work putting together a similar service with another provider.

To fill the gap, you can access many titles through MasterFILE Premier in your browser.  Admittedly, it's not as pretty or as easy to use, but more titles are available.

Here's how:
1. Click on this link: MasterFILE Premier
2. Click on "Publications" in blue bar at top of page.
3. Enter the title of a magazine in the search box and click "Browse."
4. Only magazine titles with "PDF Full Text" or "HTML Full Text" listed in the results can be read. Click on the title in the search results.
5. Click on an issue to the right of the general information about the title.
6. Choose an article from the list and click on the "Full Text" link beneath the article title.

If it gets too confusing, we will be happy to help you get you started.
