Kindle Users to Have Access to NH Downloadable eBooks This Year

kindle
Last week, Amazon announced Kindle-using library patrons across the country will soon be able to borrow eBooks through their library's OverDrive service. Here in New Hampshire, that means access to eBooks on the NH Downloadable Books site.

Kindle users have not been able to use this service in the past due to a file-type incompatibility.  NH Downloadable Books/Overdrive offer the ePub format, which is compatible with nook, Kobo, Sony, and others.  Kindle, on the other hand, uses the AZW format.  Whether ePub files will be converted for use on Kindles, similar to the way audiobook WMA files are converted for use on iPods, has yet to be explained.

For now, we're just happy to know our Kindle users will soon be able to join our other eReading patrons in using the Overdrive service.

April is National Poetry Month

nationa poetry month image courtesy or poets.org
"National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets. The concept is to widen the attention of individuals and the media—to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern. We hope to increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture while acknowledging and celebrating poetry’s ability to sustain itself in the many places where it is practiced and appreciated." (Poets.org)

Celebrate National Poetry Month with us in one of 4 ways:

Borrow a book of poetry.  Find poetry books in the 811's or 821's, both upstairs and downstairs. Read poets such as Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Jack Prelutsky and Jon Scieszka.

Contribute to our Poetree. Add leaves to our Poetree by supplying the final word of a rhyme and earn a raffle ticket.

Pick-a-Poem. Select a poem from our garden of poems and get a lollipop too!

Subscribe to Poem-a-Day. Sign up to Poem-a-Day and receive a poem in your email everyday.

Create-a-Story II: The Whole Town Celebrates!

national library week logo
The Whole Town Celebrates!

People in Crabapple Cove, ME have some special birthday traditions. No one really knows how the traditions started. Some people say that they began when Abby was the mayor, but other people say Balderdash! -- the traditions started as a way of celebrating the banana harvest. Whichever way they started, the traditions have been around for at least 4,000,000,000,000,000 years and are the same in Egypt, Dordogne, and on 0 Avenue.

On the morning of a person’s birthday, members of the person’s family give gifts of shirts for luck and silly putty for good health. Next, the birthday person has an indisputable breakfast of 639 jelly beans. After breakfast, 8 people from Oregon and Boston gather lovingly for a few turns down the slide and for a little parade. The birthday person rides from the hillside down through the neighborhood on a float shaped like a fireplace. Each child carries a balloon shaped like a banana.

After the parade, everyone gathers at the birthday home to have cake, and then there is an appendix-eating contest. Sometimes that gets splendidly messy! After the cake and the contest, there is plowing. People wear a plethora of annoying costumes when plowing, so there are always some crazy photographs of the party.

Before the party is over and everyone jumps to the Aaron Cutler Memorial Library, the birthday person actively sings a song about the banana. Birthdays are peculiar in Crabapple Cove, ME!

Create-a-Story I: A Crazy Night at the Library

national library week logo
Last week, patrons supplied words MadLib-style to be used in a collaborative story.  We collected 51 words--enough for two stories.

A Crazy Night at the Library

One night something really crazy happened at the Aaron Cutler Memorial Library. A plethora of pigeon-toed characters in the stories started running from their books!

Harry Potter climbed into Charlotte’s Web and started singing superbly with Wilbur the Pig! Alex Cross wandered into an encyclopedia and ended up lost in Santo Domingo!

The most peculiar part was when Stephanie Plum jiggled into The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and said, “Dave, I don’t think we’re in East Oshgosh, WI any more.” Alarmingly, she must have been allergic to silly putty as her nose and tongue tickled until… Ah-choo!

The 492,657,030,100 annoying characters were rambling slowly around the room eating until even the most persnickety were tired and satiated.

Callie walked in and said, “Attention!! Everybody back in place!” The characters jumped actively back into their books seeking a spot to rest. Cha-ching! Just in time! Eighty-nine patrons walked into the library, but it was safe. All the characters were back in the books where they belonged.

All Booked Up Reads Mudbound for May

book cover
Pick up a copy of Hillary Jordan's Mudbound at the Upstairs Circulation Desk.  Join the group for discussion of the novel on Wednesday, May 4th at 6:30 p.m.

From the Publisher
In Jordan's prize-winning debut, prejudice takes many forms, both subtle and brutal. It is 1946, and city-bred Laura McAllan is trying to raise her children on her husband's Mississippi Delta farm—a place she finds foreign and frightening. In the midst of the family's struggles, two young men return from the war to work the land. Jamie McAllan, Laura's brother-in-law, is everything her husband is not—charming, handsome, and haunted by his memories of combat. Ronsel Jackson, eldest son of the black sharecroppers who live on the McAllan farm, has come home with the shine of a war hero. But no matter his bravery in defense of his country, he is still considered less than a man in the Jim Crow South. It is the unlikely friendship of these brothers-in-arms that drives this powerful novel to its inexorable conclusion.

The men and women of each family relate their versions of events and we are drawn into their lives as they become players in a tragedy on the grandest scale. As Kingsolver says of Hillary Jordan, "Her characters walked straight out of 1940s Mississippi and into the part of my brain where sympathy and anger and love reside, leaving my heart racing. They are with me still."

An electrifying first novel that shocks by its language, its circumstances, and its brutal honesty, Push recounts a young black street-girl's horrendous and redemptive journey through a Harlem inferno. For Precious Jones, 16 and pregnant with her father's child, miraculous hope appears and the world begins to open up for her when a courageous, determined teacher bullies, cajoles, and inspires her to learn to read, to define her own feelings and set them down in a diary.

Check Out Our Eggs-cellent Guessing Contest for Kids!

egg photo courtesy of cafemama on flickr.com
Visit the Young Readers' Room between now and April 23rd and guess how many eggs are in the jar.  Closest without going over wins!

Helpful hint for parents:
Have your child count a small number of eggs in one area of the container, then use that visual representation of the number to help estimate how many are in the jar.

For example, your child counts 10 eggs in one area and now knows how much space a group of 10 eggs takes up.  She then estimates that there are three of these groups in the jar, so that means there are about 30 eggs in all.
