Kindle Users to Have Access to NH Downloadable eBooks This Year
Last week, Amazon announced Kindle-using library patrons across the country will soon be able to borrow eBooks through their library's OverDrive service. Here in New Hampshire, that means access to eBooks on the NH Downloadable Books site.
Kindle users have not been able to use this service in the past due to a file-type incompatibility. NH Downloadable Books/Overdrive offer the ePub format, which is compatible with nook, Kobo, Sony, and others. Kindle, on the other hand, uses the AZW format. Whether ePub files will be converted for use on Kindles, similar to the way audiobook WMA files are converted for use on iPods, has yet to be explained.
For now, we're just happy to know our Kindle users will soon be able to join our other eReading patrons in using the Overdrive service.
