museum logo
The Friends of the Library provide one pass each day to the MOS.  This general admission pass to the exhibits admits up to 4 people at $5 per person.  (Admission to the Omni Theater, the Planetarium, or Laser Show is not included.)

Passes may be reserved up to two months in advance. Please note, passes for February 20-23 have already been reserved. For more information, see Rules for Borrowing an Activity Pass

The museum's 39 current exhibits include the three special exhibits listed below.

Diabetes: A Deeper Look
This highly participatory exhibit allows visitors to better understand this growing epidemic and find out more about available treatment options. Step through a giant cell, walk into a 40-foot blood vessel, and witness dramatic visualizations of insulin treatments to gain a sense of the challenges that people with diabetes face to maintain their blood sugar levels. Activity stations with real exercise equipment and a playful "Rappin' Refrigerator" help emphasize how diet and exercise can help keep the disease at bay. Learn more.

LaserLab
Harness the power of a laser and learn to bend it around corners with this high-tech exhibit that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the laser's invention. Visitors of all ages can explore not only how these power-packed beams of light work, but also how their technology impacts our everyday lives. With several interactive components, this exhibit playfully demonstrates fundamentals of a technology that has long captured our imaginations. Learn everything you need to know in order to take on fellow visitors in a game of laser foosball, guide a laser beam through a labyrinth, and more. Learn more.

Race: Are We Different
Learn the story of race from biological, cultural, and historical points of view — through interactive components, historical artifacts, compelling photographs, and multimedia presentations. The RACE Project explains the differences among people and reveals the reality — and unreality — of race, while encouraging visitors to engage in discussion about how race continues to shape our lives today. Learn more.

All Booked Up Reads How Starbucks Saved My Life for March

book cover
March's book discussion selection is How Starbucks Saved My Life: a Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else by Michael Gates Gill. Grab your copy at the Circulation Desk and join the group for the dissection at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2nd.

From the Publisher
In his fifties, Michael Gates Gill had it all: a mansion in the suburbs, a wife and loving children, a six-figure salary, and an Ivy League education. But in a few short years, he lost his job, got divorced, and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. With no money or health insurance, he was forced to get a job at Starbucks. Having gone from power lunches to scrubbing toilets, from being served to serving, Michael was a true fish out of water.

But fate brings an unexpected teacher into his life who opens his eyes to what living well really looks like. The two seem to have nothing in common: She is a young African American, the daughter of a drug addict; he is used to being the boss but reports to her now. For the first time in his life he experiences being a member of a minority trying hard to survive in a challenging new job. He learns the value of hard work and humility, as well as what it truly means to respect another person.

Behind the scenes at one of America's most intriguing businesses, an inspiring friendship is born, a family begins to heal, and, thanks to his unlikely mentor, Michael Gill at last experiences a sense of self-worth and happiness he has never known before.

Picking Cotton is the Book of the Month for February

From Barnes and Noble
On the 1984 night that changed her life, Jennifer Thompson was a 22-year-old college student when she was awakened from a sleep by a knife-wielding rapist. She escaped from her attacker, and several days later, she picked the culprit from first a mug shot and then a physical lineup. Or so she thought. Ronald Cotton, the man who Jennifer was "absolutely, positively, without-a-doubt certain" was her rapist, served 11 years for the crime before he was exonerated by DNA evidence. Two years after his release, he and Jennifer met and, against every expectation, formed a resilient friendship. Picking Cotton, their joint memoir, speaks not only to their tragic shared experience but also to the issue of mistaken eyewitness testimony, the number one cause of wrongful convictions. Heartbreaking and then inspiring.
