Stay Informed with the AlertNow Network

emergency image courtesy of rippeWinter weather can really be worriesome, especially if you don't have access to emergency information. According to the Hudson/Litchfield News, those residents who have kids in the Litchfield School District received emergency messages during the recent power outage through the School District's message system. The rest of us can now receive local emergency public safety announcements pertaining to such things as road closings, flooding, warming shelters, and water availability (excluding public school messages) by tapping into the AlertNow network. Send your name, home phone, cell phone, work phone, and email address to Barbara Bielawski at bbielawski@litchfieldsd.org or call 578-3570, extension 3334.

Teens--Nominate a Book for the Flume Award!

flume award artAnn Hoey at the New Hampshire State Library tells us the Flume Award Committee is still looking for nominations for the 2010 list.

The Flume Award, created in 2005, is the New Hampshire Teen Reader's Choice Award. Teens in grades 9-12 nominate books they think are worthy of recognition, and ultimately vote for their favorite from a list of finalists. Voting takes place in schools, public libraries, and online. Previous winners include the DaVinci Code by Dan Brown (2006), Twilight by Stephanie Meyer (2007), and New Moon by Stephanie Meyer (2008).

Nomination Criteria
Titles must be nominated by teens in grades 9-12, and can be any outstanding fiction or nonfiction title published within the last two years, in this case 2006-2008. If the book is part of a series, it must be able to stand alone, meaning a reader doesn't have to read the other books in the series to understand what's going on.

How to Nominate a Title
Nominations can be made using either the online form or a paper form at the library. The deadline for nominations is December 31, 2008.

By the way, there's still time to read up for the 2009 vote. Check out the list of 2009 nominees and get ready to vote by April 30, 2009.

Power to the People!

electrical pole photo courtesy of drouuIt was a busy day at the library yesterday with people returning books from the extra long weekend. Most of our patrons reported having electricity back up and running, some as early as Saturday. Others reported still being without. Personally, my power came back Sunday afternoon, but prior to that my husband and I were fortunate to have both a gas fireplace, that worked without power, and a generator.

All in all, I had a very enjoyable power outage. On Friday I got to spend time with friends I don't normally get to hang out with because of their busy activity schedule. We played Scrabble by sunlight, went out to dinner together, and played Family Feud by candle light. Saturday, I had dinner with my "December friends"--people I generally only see over the Christmas/New Year holidays. Then Sunday it was my annual shopping day with girlfriends, followed by the company of another set of friends as overnight guests.

So I'm wondering--what did you do to pass the time during your power outage? Just click on "comments" below and let us know!

With four shopping days left until Christmas, Manny must convince his near-mutinous staff to hunker down and serve the final onslaught of hungry retirees, lunatics, and holiday office parties. All the while, he's wondering how to handle the waitress he's still in love with, his pregnant girlfriend at home, and where to find the present that will make everything better."

December's Book of the Month is A Redbird Christmas

book coverA Redbird Christmas by Fannie Flagg is our featured novel for December.

"Deep in the southernmost part of Alabama, along the banks of a lazy winding river, lies the sleepy little community known as Lost River, a place that time itself seems to have forgotten. After a startling diagnosis from his doctor, Oswald T. Campbell leaves behind the cold and damp of the oncoming Chicago winter to spend what he believes will be his last Christmas in the warm and welcoming town of Lost River. There he meets the postman who delivers mail by boat, the store owner who nurses a broken heart, the ladies of the Mystic Order of the Royal Polka Dots Secret Society, who do clandestine good works. And he meets a little redbird named Jack, who is at the center of this tale of a magical Christmas when something so amazing happened that those who witnessed it have never forgotten it. Once you experience the wonder, you too will never forget A Redbird Christmas." (barnesandnoble.com)
