Library Survivor Fun

tiki statue

Ooga chucka, ooga chucka...Library Survivor was a blast! 24 kids and teens dared to answer the call to bravery. Teams assembled in the library, received their instructions, and were on their way. Survivor teams were given clues and asked to locate information using the computer catalog, which lead them to envelopes containing the tasks they needed to complete. Survival tasks included building rafts out of pencils, bandaging injuries, map making, basket weaving, catching fish that were flung at them with a flipper, constellation identification, hat making, catching birds launched from a racket, and making a “Help” sign in Spanish. Teams earned points based on the length of time it took to complete all tasks, and how well the each task was executed. Third place teams were found to be hopeless and were awarded dunce caps. Second place teams were awarded safari hats, because they would hang in there for a while, but were going to need some help. The first place teams were the true survivors. They were awarded masks to help them blend in, because they were expected to last a good long while.

The winning team for Kid’s Library Survivor was Lauren, Matt, Michael, and Vinny. The winning team for Teen Library Survivor was Lynn, Kayla, Rachel, and Tim. Congratulations—you were the true survivors!

New Features On The Blog

I'm on vacation for the week, so naturally I decided to spend some time messing around with the blog. I added two new features: a site search, and a new subscription service. The site search allows you to enter a search term to locate the blog posts that contain that term. Forget which teen summer reading contests Renatta won? Just enter her name in the search box to find out. Easy as pie. With the new subscription service, you can enter your email address and receive notification anytime new content is posted to the blog. Again, easy as pie. (Of course for those of you who know me, "pie" isn't anything I would ever consider easy, unless I bought it at Hannaford.) Please make use of these new features and let me know what you think.

Wizardly Do-hickey Winners!

wizard
Congratulations to Kelly and Amy Bois for winning the Wizardly Do-hickey contest!

Contestants received a DVD album with a CD inside (we finally found a use for all of those AOL CDs we get in the mail!), and were asked to create a magical object.

Kelly created "The Unlocker," guaranteed to open any lock. This should come in handy when she forgets the combination to her school locker.

Amy created the "Mystical Changer." In just a minute you can change yourself into a different person. This could come in handy when you want to get your siblings in trouble.

Teen Weekly Contest Winners

Congratulations to Renatta Landrau for winning the Scatergories contest! Renatta came up with the greatest number of unique words, beginning with the letter "m," in ten different categories. The category that gave everyone the most trouble was sports. Hmmm... Can you think of one? Martial arts and motor-cross may not be mainstream sports, but they do fit the bill.

Jacob Goldstein was last week's "Whozat?" winner, correctly identifying all 3 celebrities. Way to go Jacob!

All Booked Up in September

The library's book discussion group, All Booked Up, is reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon for their September 7th meeting.
"In post-World War II Barcelona, young Daniel is taken by his bookseller father to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a massive sanctuary where books are guarded from oblivion. Told to choose one book to protect, he selects The Shadow of the Wind… Part detective story, part boy's adventure, part romance, fantasy, and gothic horror, the intricate plot is urged on by extravagant foreshadowing and nail-nibbling tension." Keir Graff, Booklist

More copies of The Shadow of the Wind should be available at the Main Desk on Thursday. Pick up a copy and join the group on September 7th at 6:30 in the library for a lively discussion. New members are always welcome.
