Library Survivor

Tiki statue
Ooga chucka, ooga chucka, ooga ooga ooga chucka... I can hear the beat of the drums, and the natives chanting. They are calling to boys and girls, ages 9-11, who think they have what it takes to survive. Ooga chucka, ooga chucka, ooga ooga ooga chucka. They want to see who has the survival skills to be the True Library Survivors.

Tribal teams will be asked to use their skills to find the materials they need to collect in order to survive. First they will discover where they need to go; then they will have to do whatever is required of them when they get there... To survive, the tribal teams will work together to complete a total of 10 tasks, and points will be awarded based on their accomplishments. Total points will be tallied at the end of the event to determine who are the True Library Survivors!

For those who dare, Library Survivor will take place on Wednesday, August 17th, from 1:00-2:30. Registration is required, and may be done in person, or by email. If necessary, an additional session will be scheduled to accommodate demand. Ooga chucka, ooga chucka, ooga ooga ooga chucka... Are they calling you?

Jumpin' Jehosophat!

Naturalist holding frog.A Naturalist from the Massabesic Audubon Center was at the library last Friday, and she brought 5 of her little slimey friends with her. No, I'm not being rude, her little slimey friends were frogs! Over 30 children participated in Fabulous Frogs and learned about the life cycle of frogs, what kinds of frogs they can find locally, and how to sound like a frog. They were then divided into groups and were given a frog to identify. The highlight of the morning was watching the Naturalist feed the frogs a tasty meal of crickets. I'd rather have a Twinkee, but hey, that's just me.

P.S. What do frogs say after hearing a joke? Git-it git-it!

Top Secret Undercover Assignment for Teens

Thumb Print
We've added a top secret undercover assignment to our teen Summer Reading Quest. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to covertly approach the circulation desk and tell the librarian the secret password. (This can be found in the teen room.) If all goes well, the librarian will hand you a special package to take home and assemble. What's in the package, you ask? Unfortunately, the contents of this package must remain a secret at this time. You'll have to come in to find out...

Wizardly Fun

magic wands
Last Friday our teens got together to celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. The group was split into two teams for a game of Potter trivia, in which "The Witches of Litchfield" defeated "The Frosted Flakes" (that's boys for ya...) 12.5 to 9.5. Wand making was next, as well as a quick course in wand care. Did you know wands should be polished every 2-3 weeks, and should never be used to scratch any part of your body, or to toast marshmallows? Once the wands were finished, everyone kicked back and enjoyed cockroach clusters and pumpkin juice.

Congratulations to Kelly Bois, winner of the Great Harry Potter Give-Away! Kelly took home a copy of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince," courtesy of the Friends of the Library!

Insulted Librarian Names Winner

Shakespeare

Congratulations to Renatta Landrau for insulting a librarian and winning the contest! Yes, you read correctly. Last week was "Insult the Librarian Week" here at Cutler Library. Teens were encouraged to be rude. We posted signs begging for them to let us have it. The trick was the insult had to be in the language of Shakespeare. Hmmm... Don't worry, we made it easy. After all, this isn't homework. We gave the teens a guide to help them along. Well, after being called a "beslubbering hasty-witted maggot-pie," I started having second thoughts about the whole thing. But hey, fun is fun!

Seashell Contest Winner

Well, it looks like Doreen Harvey sells seashells by the seashore, because she had the winning guess in the contest to win The Mermaid Chair, by Sue Monk Kidd. Doreen's guess of 37 put her in the winner's seat. The actual number of seashells was 39. Kathy Devereaux and Beckie Moore each guessed 40--so close, but alas, they went over.

Flippin' Great!

Last week's Camp Wannaread flip book contest brought in a lot of great entries. We saw flowers growing, marshmellows roasting, and bees buzzing around. The many entries were judged in three age categories based on creativity, presentation, and the ability to follow directions.

Here are the results:

Tyler Grant, age 4, is the winner of the PreK-K category. Drawn in crayon, Bird Flying Around in the Sky features a solitary bird flying happily through a clear blue sky.

Riley Grant, age 7, is the winner of the 1st-3rd grade category. Ralph's Squiggle Adventure, drawn in marker, features a worm traveling under ground beneath a summer landscape.

Molly Connor, age 10, is the winner of the 4th-6th grade category.
Rendered in colored pencil and collage, Peek-a-Boo! Nature's Surprise features a mother bird and a hatching egg. When mother sees the egg is cracking, she flies off in search of food. While she is gone the baby bird hatches, winks, and settles back into the egg. Mother bird returns with a worm thinking the baby has yet to hatch.

Congratulations to Tyler, Riley, and Molly!

It's a Goldstein Family Sweep!

Last week it was the Ledoux family; this week it's the Goldstein family! Congratulations to Jacob Goldstein, the latest winner in the weekly contests for Teens. Teens were asked to submit gross recipes in order to gain entry in the contest, and Jacob submitted a most disgusting recipe for Head Cheese. If you aren't sure what Head Cheese is, let me assure you it has nothing whatsoever to do with cheese. According to the recipe, you start by cleaning the teeth of a calf's head with a stiff brush, remove the ears, brains, eyes, and snout... Eventually this concoction is poured into a mold, chilled, and cut into slices. Any takers?? Other favorites included "Jellied Moose Nose," and "Fake Snot"--two items certain to be found on Martha Stewart's dining table.

Jacob's mother, Amy Goldstein, was the winner in the Weekly Book Review Drawing. Amy submitted two entries for One For The Money by Janet Evanovich and Loves Music, Loves to Dance by Mary Higgins Clark. The former received a "Loud and Clear" rating, and the later a "Good Connection."

Jacob wins the prize of his choice from the weekly contest offerings, and Amy the gift certificate of her choice from a number of area merchants.

Wizardly Do-hickey?

Ann is asking our Teens to get creative and enter the Wizardly Do-hickey Contest. Now, you probably know what a wizard is, but a do-hickey? Well, it's kind of like a thingumabob, or a doodad, or even a gizmo. And this particular do-hickey has magical powers. Or at least it will once you've invented it.

Pick up the basic components of your wizardly do-hickey at the library, take them home, ask them to speak to you, or whatever it is you do to get inspiration. Then embellish the components--that's fancy talk for 'decorate'--give it a name, tell us what it does and how it does it! Bring your invention to the library by August 5th where we'll display them, judge them, and award a prize.

Writing From Camp Wannaread

Judy Pancoast was great with the children yesterday. She took the time to meet each child as they came in, and amazingly remembered their names throughout the music filled program. Judy had children singing, screaming, and dancing, all on cue, as they participated in silly songs like "Swimming in Jello" and "One Big Eye." The spotlight was on five-year-old Camryn Wirbal as she made her debut as a backup singer on "Goin' Bug Hunting." Camryn stood on stage with Judy, held the microphone by herself, and came in on cue every time. Look out Brittany! Samantha Walsh, Emma Kuczkowski, and Trevor Famisan "built" sandcastles during Judy's beach song, and Lee Nordyke and Madison Corbeil helped out later with their rock star imitations. One child had so much fun she wanted to call Judy later that night. Lexi Pace told her mother, "Judy said I could call her. I want to call her. Her number is 1877." Her mother thought a letter might be more appropriate, so Judy has fan mail on the way.

"Writing From Camp Wannaread" was made possible through a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the New Hampshire State Library, and donations from the Byrne Foundation, CHILIS, the Cogswell Benevolent Trust, and Wilson Farms. Special thanks to Vice Principal Tom Lecklider, for allowing us to use the LMS cafeteria.

DiaL "R" Weekly Drawing Winner

Congratulations to Bethellen Ledoux! She is the first winner in the DiaL "R" FoR ReaDiNG Weekly Book Review Drawing. (Try saying that 3 times fast.) Bethellen submitted a book review for The Falls by Joyce Carol Oates. She gave it a "Good Connection" rating.

Bethellen can pick up the gift certificate of her choosing at the library. That's right, the gift certificate of her choosing. I decided to let the weekly winners choose from the available gift certificates instead of assigning a particular one each week. That way they can have something they really want. Except for the last winner, of course, who will get whatever is left and be darn happy about it I'm sure.

(By the way, if you were wondering, Bethellen is the mother of Catrina, the winner of the teen contest. However foul play is not suspected at this time. )

Griffon Feather Contest Winner

Last week, teens were asked to guess how many griffon feathers we had in a mason jar. First of all, some of you may be wondering what a griffon is. Also spelled griffin or gryphon, a griffon is "a fabulous beast with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion." (Answer.com) This is not to be confused with the breed of dog of Belgian origin, which quite frankly, does not have feathers. Second of all, you may be wondering how we came to have a jar full of this beast's feathers. This is a secret which I cannot divulge. Sorry. Third of all, you may be wondering how many feathers we had. The answer is 258 feathers in browns, blacks, and white. Finally, you are, no doubt, wondering who won the contest. Catrina Ledoux had the winning guess of 250. Congratulations Catrina! You may pick up your prize at the library.

This Week in Summer Reading

We are entering week three of summer reading. It always amazes me how fast the summer reading clubs zip. The planning and preparation process can seem endless, but the execution is over before you know it. I guess that's because it's just so much fun!

Camp Wannaread This Week:
  • "Flippin' Out" Art Contest. Design and illustrate a flip book depicting a simple nature or camping related picture story. You know what these are--as you flip through the pages the an object seems to move around. It might be a butterfly darting around, or a mosquito having lunch, or, well, use your imagination! All the details are listed in your summer reading booklet. Entries are due by 6:00p.m. on Friday, and willbe judged on creativity, presentation, and your ability to follow directions.
  • Singer/songwriter Judy Pancoast performs live at LMS on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. This highly energetic musical program is your chance to sing, laugh, dance, and then take a nap when you get home. Chock full of humor and clever lyrics, Pancoasts performance appeals to young and old alike. All seating in on the floor, so bring something squishy to sit on. You may also bring your friends, cousins, grandparents, whomever you like! "Writing From Camp Wannaread" was made possible through a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the New Hampshire State Library, and donations from the Byrne Foundation, CHILIS, the Cogswell Benevolent Trust, and Wilson Farms.
  • Home Sweet Tent. If someone called your house and said they would give you a million dollars if you could set up a tent in 15 minutes, could you do it? How about a campsite? If you answered no, then you should join us on the library lawn on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. to find out how it is done. Members of the Litchfield Boy Scouts will be on hand to share their expertise, along with some good old fashion fun.
  • Camp Wannaread Tree. Have you made a leaf for the Camp Wannaread tree growing in the library? If you are all answering 'yes,' some of you are fibbing, because I know we do not have 170+ leaves on our tree. All you have to do is pick out a leaf, the bug-rubbing plate of your choice, a crayon, and get rubbing! Then cut out your leaf, write your name on it, and give it to a librarian.
  • Camp Wannaread Journals. Do you know where your camp journal is? I hope you answered 'yes' to this one, and you've been diligently filling it in each week, keeping track of all the points you are earning. Don't forget to find a camp recipe, gather items for the scavenger hunt, and write a book review--they are each worth 2 points, and together will earn you another raffle ticket!
A Summer Reading Quest
  • That's Just Gross! What's just gross? Why, all the truly revolting recipes you should be bringing to the library this week! Bring us a yucky, gross, disgusting, or revolting recipe as your entry in this week's contest. The recipes will be put together to form our own revolting recipe book.
DiaL "R" FoR ReaDiNG
  • Weekly Book Review Drawing. Write a book review and submit it to the library a) in person, b) via email at cutlerlibrary@adelphia.net, or c) via this blog. Each review gets you a raffle ticket.
  • Book Review Alley. All submitted book reviews posted on DiaL "R" bulletin board in the upstairs hallway. Check them out to see what everyone else is reading and what they think about it.
  • Novelist Scavenger Hunt. This is an add-on event not found in your summer reading brochure. Stop by the library and pick up your scavenger hunt list and log-in for Novelist. Submit your answers in person, or via email at cutlerlibrary@adelphia.net with the subject line "Scavenger Hunt," for your chance to win Book Bucks to the Friends of the Library book sale. Entries are due Friday at 6:00 p.m.

We're Just Wild About Turtles

On my way over to LMS this morning, I picked up a hitchhiker. In this case, the hitchhiker was a large screw, and he'd embedded himself in my rear driver's side tire. When I got out of my car I could hear him making a terrible fuss. And then, of course, I began mine.

You might be wondering what, exactly, this has to do with turles. Well, if my car were a turtle and had an injured rear foot, who would I call? Mary Doane of Project Nature, that's who, because she's just "wild about turtles." And she was whom I was going to see at LMS. Mary entertained a group of about 25 children with music, interesting facts, live turtles, and creative art. The children learned how to tell if a turtle is a tortoise, how to tell a boy from a girl, how to tell a land turtle from an aquatic turtle, and well, a lot more. (I can't really tell you what that "a lot more" is because I was busy watching for AAA to arrive to get rid of my hitchhiker!) Mary answered lots of questions, such as, "Where do your turtles live?" and "Why is it called a red eared slider?" Some questions were easier to answer than others.

Mary finished the program by inviting the children to make a turtle of their own to take home. She showed the children an easy way to make the shell, passed out several different colors of clay, and let them go wild about turtles. About this time, AAA arrived, repaired my turtle, I mean my tire, and we were all on our way.

Special thanks to Vice Principal Tom Lecklider for allowing us to use their facility, and our good friend fJack or making sure we had everything we needed.

It's All About Harry

The latest book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, will be released at 12:01 a.m. on July 16th. Miss Ann has decided to hold a Harry Potter Party on Friday, July 22nd at 3:00 p.m. in celebration of the release. At the time of this writing, the party is set to include a trivia contest, wand making, and munchies. Registration is required and fans may register for this event in the Teen Room at the library.

The Friends of the Library are also sponsoring "The Great Harry Potter Give-Away." Enter to win a copy of the latest book at the Main Desk. The winner will be announced at the end of the Harry Potter Party. (You do not have to be present to win.) To be fair, we ask that you only enter if you intend to read the book yourself. And, of course, one entry per person.

For Harry Potter fun on the web, take the Wizard's Challenge, enter the Marauder's Map and head on over to the Quidditch Pitch for tryouts, check out the Harry Potter Encyclopedia, or try your hand at a few puzzles and mind games.

Creepy Crawlies Contest Winner

Congratulations to Riley Grant! He is the winner of the "Creepy Crawlies" guessing contest from week one of Camp Wannaread! Riley guessed there were 140 snakes and lizards in our jar. There were actually 144, and Riley had the closest guess without going over. He really knows his snakes and lizards. Riley wins the Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and the snakes and lizards from the jar (minus a couple used elsewhere). I hope his mom isn't squeamish...

107 guesses ranged from 4 to 1000. (I always like to see moms and dads let their children make their own guesses, even if it's obviously way off. If junior says 4, then 4 it should be. )

I hope everyone is busy working on their flip books for next week's contest, "Flippin' Out." It should be a fun one!

"Survery Says..." Results

In "Survey Says," the first weekly contest of A Summer Reading Quest, teens were asked to come up with the most common answer to a variety of questions. Catrina Ledoux, Dominic Pace, and Abby Connor all scored 66 points. Instead of drawing a name to declare a single winner, I decided to give all three prizes. Congratulations! Participants can stop by the library this coming week to see what the number one answers were for each of the questions.
