High School Book Group Reads Death Cloud for August 28th

High School Book Group Reads "Death Cloud" for August 28, 2014

For the 2nd meeting of the newly formed High School Book Group, teens read Andrew Lane's Death Cloud (Sherlock Holmes: The Legend Begins Series Book 1).  Join Miss Kerri and the group on Thursday, August 28th @ 4:15PM.

About the Book
It is the summer of 1868, and Sherlock Holmes is fourteen. On break from boarding school, he is staying with eccentric strangers—his uncle and aunt—in their vast house in Hampshire. When two local people die from symptoms that resemble the plague, Holmes begins to investigate what really killed them, helped by his new tutor, an American named Amyus Crowe. So begins Sherlock’s true education in detection, as he discovers the dastardly crimes of a brilliantly sinister villain of exquisitely malign intent.

History Buffs Read Freedom Summer for August 21st

History Buffs Read "Freedom Summer" for August 21, 2014
History Buffs has chosen Freedom Summer: The Savage Season of 1964 That Made Mississippi Burn and Made America a Democracy by Bruce Watson for discussion on Thursday, August 21st @ 6:30PM.

Copies of the book are available in "New Room" on the Upper Level of the library.

About the Book
A riveting account of one of the most remarkable episodes in American history.
In his critically acclaimed history Freedom Summer, award- winning author Bruce Watson presents powerful testimony about a crucial episode in the American civil rights movement. During the sweltering summer of 1964, more than seven hundred American college students descended upon segregated, reactionary Mississippi to register black voters and educate black children. On the night of their arrival, the worst fears of a race-torn nation were realized when three young men disappeared, thought to have been murdered by the Ku Klux Klan. Taking readers into the heart of these remarkable months, Freedom Summer shines new light on a critical moment of nascent change in America.

Book Bunch Reads "The Tale of Despereaux" for their August 20th Meeting
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo is Book Bunch title for their August meeting. Bunchers in grades 3-5 will gather on Wednesday, August 20th at 4:00PM for book discussion and a short activity.

Copies of the book are available in the Young Readers' Room.

About the Book
Welcome to the story of Despereaux Tilling, a mouse who is in love with music, stories, and a princess named Pea. It is also the story of a rat called Roscuro, who lives in the darkness and covets a world filled with light. And it is the story of Miggery Sow, a slow-witted serving girl who harbors a simple, impossible wish. These three characters are about to embark on a journey that will lead them down into a horrible dungeon, up into a glittering castle, and, ultimately, into each other's lives. What happens then? As Kate DiCamillo would say: Reader, it is your destiny to find out.
From the master storyteller who brought us BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE comes another classic, a fairy tale full of quirky, unforgettable characters, with twenty-four stunning black-and-white illustrations by Timothy Basil Ering. This paperback edition pays tribute to the book's classicdesign, featuring a rough front and elegant gold stamping.
The adventures of Desperaux Tilling, a small mouse of unusual talents, the princess that he loves, the servant girl who longs to be a princess, and a devious rat determined to bring them all to ruin.

About the Book
The word “gifted” has never been applied to Donovan Curtis. It’s usually more like “don’t try this at home.” So when the troublemaker pulls a major prank at his middle school, he thinks he’s finally gone too far. But thanks to a mix-up, instead of getting in trouble, Donovan is sent to the Academy for Scholastic Distinction, a special program for gifted and talented students.
It isn’t exactly what Donovan had intended, but there couldn’t be a more perfect hideout. That is, if he can fool his family, the teachers, the superintendent, and a school full of fellow students with IQs well above genius level.

All Booked Up Reads Little Bee for August

book cover
Little Bee by Chris Cleave is the chosen novel for All Booked Up's next meeting on August 13th at 6:30. Copies of the book are available at the upper level Circulation Desk.

About the Book
WE DON'T WANT TO TELL YOU TOO MUCH ABOUT THIS BOOK.
It is a truly special story and we don't want to spoil it.
Nevertheless, you need to know something, so we will just say this:
It is extremely funny, but the African beach scene is horrific.
The story starts there, but the book doesn't.
And it's what happens afterward that is most important.
Once you have read it, you'll want to tell everyone about it. When you do, please don't tell them what happens either. The magic is in how it unfolds.

Next Up: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
