Adult Book Group Reads The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry for December 6th or 8th

Adult Book Group Reads "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" for December 6 or 8, 2017
Rachel Joyce’s The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is the chosen title for All Booked Up’s discussion on Wednesday, December 6th at 6:30PM or Friday, December 8th at 1:00PM.  Copies of the book are available in the upper level “New” room.

About the Book
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn't seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Harold pens a quick reply and, leaving Maureen to her chores, heads to the corner mailbox. But then, as happens in the very best works of fiction, Harold has a chance encounter, one that convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person. And thus begins the unlikely pilgrimage at the heart of Rachel Joyce's remarkable debut. Harold Fry is determined to walk six hundred miles from Kingsbridge to the hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed because, he believes, as long as he walks, Queenie Hennessey will live.

Still in his yachting shoes and light coat, Harold embarks on his urgent quest across the countryside. Along the way he meets one fascinating character after another, each of whom unlocks his long-dormant spirit and sense of promise. Memories of his first dance with Maureen, his wedding day, his joy in fatherhood, come rushing back to him--allowing him to also reconcile the losses and the regrets. As for Maureen, she finds herself missing Harold for the first time in years.

And then there is the unfinished business with Queenie Hennessy.

Page Turners, our book group for tweens in grades 6-8, is reading Little Brother by Cory Doctorow for their get-together on Thursday, December 14th from 2:05-3:15PM in room 10 of the Litchfield Middle School. Page Turners begins with an after school snack, followed by a discussion of the book, and a short activity.

Copies of the book are available in the upper-level Teen area and the lower-level Young Readers’ Room.

About the Book
Marcus, a.k.a "w1n5t0n," is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works–and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school's intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.

But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they're mercilessly interrogated for days.

When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself.

November's Book of the Month is The Wangs vs the World

November 2017's Book of the Month is "The Wangs vs the World"
The Wangs vs the World by Jade Chang is our featured title for November. Copies are available in the “New” room on the upper level of the library.

About the Book
Charles Wang, a brash, lovable businessman who built a cosmetics empire and made a fortune, has just lost everything in the financial crisis. So he rounds up two of his children from schools that he can no longer afford and packs them into the only car that wasn’t repossessed. Together with their wealth-addicted stepmother, Barbra, they head on a cross-country journey from their foreclosed Bel-Air home to the Upstate New York retreat of the eldest Wang daughter, Saina. The trip brings them together in a way money never could.
