Kid's Book Group Reads Swindle for September 21st

Kid's Book Group Reads "Swindle" for September 21, 2016
Book Bunch starts a new year with Gordon Korman's Swindle, the story of a ragtag crew of oddballs on a mission to retrieve a rare baseball card from an unscrupulous dealer.  We invite children in grades 3-5 to meet at the library on Wednesday, September 21st at 4:00PM for a discussion of Swindle followed by a fun activity.

Books are available in the Young Readers' Room.

About the Book
After a mean collector named Swindle cons him out of his most valuable baseball card, Griffin Bing must put together a band of misfits to break into Swindle's compound and recapture the card. There are many things standing in their way -- a menacing guard dog, a high-tech security system, a very secret hiding place, and their inability to drive -- but Griffin and his team are going to get back what's rightfully his . . . even if hijinks ensue.

This is Gordon Korman at his crowd-pleasing best, perfect for readers who like to hoot, howl, and heist.

Bonus
Should your hard to please 3rd-5th grader thoroughly enjoy this book, there are an additional 7 books in the series!

Tween Book Group Reads Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children for September 8th

Tween Book Group Reads <"Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" for September 8, 2016
Page Turner's selection for their September 8th meeting at 2:30PM is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children written by Ransom Riggs. Join this book group for tweens in grades 6-8 for a snack, discussion or the book and a short activity.

Copies of the book are available in both the Teen Area upstairs and the Young Readers' Room downstairs.

About the Book
A mysterious island.

 An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Adult Book Group Reads All the Light We Cannot See for September 2nd & 7th

Adult Book Group Reads "All the Light We Cannot See" for September 2016
All Booked Up's selection for September is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.  Join the Friday afternoon group on September 2nd at 1:00PM or the Wednesday evening group on September 7th at 6:30PM.

About the Book
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

The Wild Water Walking Club is the Book of the Month in August

"The Wild Water Walking Club" is the Book of the Month in August 2016
The Wild Water Walking Club by Claire Cook is the featured title for August.  Copies are available in the "New" room on the upper level of the library.

About the Book
After losing her boyfriend and her job in one fell swoop, Noreen has no idea what her next step is. So she puts on a new pair of sneakers and a seriously outdated pair of exercise pants, and walks. Before long she's joined by two neighbors as lost as she is and figures out time flies and fitness is actually fun when you're walking with friends. Throw in a road trip to Seattle for a lavender festival, a career-coaching group that looks like a bad sequel to The Breakfast Club, some terrific romantic comedy twists and turns, a quirky multigenerational cast of supporting characters, and the result is a tribute to female friendship that will inspire you to pick up the phone and call all your old friends-or maybe even start your own walking group.
