Live Birds of Prey Event

Jane Kelly, a raptor rehabilitator from Epping, presents a family program featuring three live birds of prey on Tuesday, June 21st in the Litchfield Middle School Cafeteria at 7:00PM.

Jane found her calling after finding 10 dead barred owls in a three month period, all hit by cars, on Route 101 between Auburn and Hampton.

Since that time she  became licensed in falconry and established On the Wing, a rehab center where she rehabilitates hawks, owls, vultures, osprey, falcons, kestrels and merlins.

Come hear her story and learn about the need for rehabilitating these majestic creatures following automobile collisions.

This free event is open to the public and appropriate for all age groups.

About the Book
In a magic kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone's joke. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. Rump discovers he has a gift for spinning straw into gold. His best friend, Red Riding Hood, warns him that magic is dangerous, and she’s right. With each thread he spins, he weaves himself deeper into a curse.

To break the spell, Rump must go on a perilous quest, fighting off pixies, trolls, poison apples, and a wickedly foolish queen. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendship—and a cheeky sense of humor—he just might triumph in the end.

Tween Book Group Reads Goodbye Stranger for June 9th

Tween Book Group Reads "Goodbye Stranger" for June 9, 2016Goodbye Stranger by Rebecca Stead is the next read for Page Turners, our book group for tweens in grades 6-8.  Join the group on Thursday, June 9th @ 2:30PM for a snack, discussion and short activity.

Copies of the book are available in both the Teen Area and Young Readers' Room.

About the Book
Love is __________.

It’s the beginning of seventh grade and Bridge, Emily, and Tab have a pact: no fighting. Bridge is an accident survivor who’s wondering why she’s still alive. Emily has new curves and an almost-boyfriend who wants a certain kind of picture. Tab sees through everybody’s games. Or so she tells the world. It’s also the beginning of seventh grade for Sherm Russo, and everything is different for him, too. When he gets to know Bridge, he wonders: what does it mean to fall for a girl—as a friend?

Meanwhile, on the approaching Valentine’s Day, an unnamed high school girl struggles with a betrayal. How long can she hide in plain sight?

This is a story about the bonds—and limits —of friendship.

Adult Book Group Reads The Royal We for June 1st or 3rd

Adult Book Group Reads "The Royal We" for June 1st or 3rd, 2016All Booked Up's selection for June is The Royal We by Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan. Join the Wednesday evening group on June 1st at 6:30PM or the Friday afternoon group on June 3rd at 1:00PM.

Copies of the book are available on the Upper Level of the library.

About the Book
American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister, Lacey, has always been the romantic who fantasized about glamour and royalty, fame and fortune. Yet it's Bex who seeks adventure at Oxford and finds herself living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, Great Britain's future king. And when Bex can't resist falling for Nick, the person behind the prince, it propels her into a world she did not expect to inhabit, under a spotlight she is not prepared to face.

Dating Nick immerses Bex in ritzy society, dazzling ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace with him and his charming, troublesome brother, Freddie. But the relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical tabloids, Nick's sparkling and far more suitable ex-girlfriends, and a royal family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he's fated to become.
Which is how she gets into trouble.

Now, on the eve of the wedding of the century, Bex is faced with whether everything she's sacrificed for love-her career, her home, her family, maybe even herself-will have been for nothing.

Circling the Sun is the Book of the Month in May

"Circling the Sun" is the Book of the Month in May 2016
Circling the Sun by Paula McLain is our featured novel in May. Copies are available in the "New" room on the upper level of the library.

About the Book
Paula McLain, author of the phenomenal bestseller The Paris Wife, now returns with her keenly anticipated new novel, transporting readers to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. Circling the Sun brings to life a fearless and captivating woman—Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who as Isak Dinesen wrote the classic memoir Out of Africa.

Brought to Kenya from England as a child and then abandoned by her mother, Beryl is raised by both her father and the native Kipsigis tribe who share his estate. Her unconventional upbringing transforms Beryl into a bold young woman with a fierce love of all things wild and an inherent understanding of nature’s delicate balance. But even the wild child must grow up, and when everything Beryl knows and trusts dissolves, she is catapulted into a string of disastrous relationships.

Beryl forges her own path as a horse trainer, and her uncommon style attracts the eye of the Happy Valley set, a decadent, bohemian community of European expats who also live and love by their own set of rules. But it’s the ruggedly charismatic Denys Finch Hatton who ultimately helps Beryl navigate the uncharted territory of her own heart. The intensity of their love reveals Beryl’s truest self and her fate: to fly.
