Kid's Book Group Reads Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allan Crow for November 18th

Kid's Book Group Reads "Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allan Crow" for November 18, 2015
Book Bunchers in grades 3-5 read Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allan Crow by James Howe and  for their November 18th gathering at 4:00.  The book discussion will be followed by a short activity. Books are available in the Young Readers' Room on the lower level of the library.

About the Book
The little bunny had begun to move for the first time since he had been put in his cage. He lifted his tiny nose and inhaled deeply, as if gathering sustenance from the moonlight.

"He slicked his ears back close to his body, and for the first time," Chester said, "I noticed the peculiar marking on his forehead. What had seemed an ordinary black spot between his ears took on a strange v-shape, which connected with the big black patch that covered his back and each side of his neck. It looked as if he was wearing a coat . . . no, more like a cape than a coat."

Through the silence had drifted the strains of a remote and exotic music.

"I could have sworn it was a gypsy violin," Chester told me. "I thought perhaps a caravan was passing by, so I ran to the window."

I remembered my mother telling me something about caravans when I was a puppy. But for the life of me, I couldn't remember what.

"What's a caravan?" I asked, feeling a little stupid.

"A caravan is a band of gypsies traveling through the forest in their wagons," Chester answered.

"Ah, yes." It was coming back to me now. "Station wagons?"

"No, covered wagons! The gypsies travel all through the land, setting up camps around great bonfires, doing magical tricks, and sometimes, if you cross their palms with a piece of silver, they'll tell your fortune."

"You mean if I gave them a fork, they'd tell my fortune?" I asked, breathlessly.

Chester looked at me with disdain. "Save your silverware," he said, "it wasn't a caravan after all."

I was disappointed. "What was it?" I asked.

Chester explained that when he looked out the window, he saw Professor Mickelwhite, our next door neighbor, playing the violin in hisliving room. He listened for a few moments to the haunting melody and sighed with relief. I've really got to stop reading these horror stories late at night, he thought, it's beginning to affect my mind. He yawned and turned to go back to his chair and get some sleep. As he turned, however, he was startled by what he saw.

There in the moonlight, as the music filtered through the air, sat the bunny, his eyes intense and staring, an unearthly aura about them.

"Now, this is the part you won't believe," Chester said to me, "but as I watched, his lips parted in a hideous smile, and where a rabbit's buck teeth should have been, two little pointed fangs glistened."

I wasn't sure what to make of Chester's story, but the way he told it, it set my hair on end.

Battle of the 1st Grade Classes

Each September the library celebrates Library Card Sign-Up Month by teaming up with Griffin Memorial School in an attempt to get public library cards into the hands of all 1st graders.

To make things a little more fun, the 1st grade teachers battle it out against each other to see whose class will have the most card holders.  This year's contest resulted in a tie.  Mrs. Beach's class and Mrs. Doucette's class both achieved 100% participation.  Not only was this our first tie, but GMS reached an all-time high with 90% of 1st grade students holding public library cards. Hats off to the great efforts of Miss Carrie-Anne, our children's librarian, Mrs. Beach, Mrs. Doucette, Mrs. Webster and Mrs. Quimby!

In addition to the joy of having a library card, the winning classes receive a special Story Time with Miss Carrie-Anne along with a couple of goodies.

Why You Should Use Audiobooks Everyday

I am a big fan of audiobooks.  Specifically free downloadable audibooks.  I always have one going and  a few in reserve.  I like audiobooks because they allow me to read in situations where a print book just wouldn't do.  I listen to audiobooks in the car to and from work and while out running errands.  I listen to audiobooks while I walk and fold laundry.  (Not at the same time, of course.)

This is why Adam Sockel's article "6 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Audiobooks Everyday" resonated with me. Sockel's recommends using audiobooks to:
1. multitask at work
2. better enjoy working out
3. make traffic not suck (so much)
4. give your eyes a rest before bed
5. help young readers learn sentence structure, grammar, etc.
6. start to enjoying chores

Because I listen to audiobooks while doing other things, I usually select something on the lighter or suspenseful side. If a book requires a lot of concentration, it's out as an audiobook choice--it's hard for me to keep up if there are too many characters and too much bouncing around.  I save those titles to enjoy in print.

Audiobooks are available from our library on CD, and more recently on MP3-CDs, and for download to MP3 players, smart phones, your computer and sometimes CD.

If you are a fan of audiobooks, how do you use them?  If you haven't tried them, let us help you get started!

Tween Book Group Reads Among the Hidden for November

Tween Book Group Reads "Among the Hidden" for November 12, 2015
Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix, is the discussion novel for November.  Page Turners, a 6th-8th grad book discussion group, gathers at the library Thursday, November 12th at 2:30PM.  Copies of the book are available in both the Teen Area and Young Readers' Room.

About the Book
In a future where the Population Police enforce the law limiting a family to only two children, Luke, an illegal third child, has lived all his twelve years in isolation and fear on his family's farm in this start to the Shadow Children series from Margaret Peterson Haddix.

Luke has never been to school. He's never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend's house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend.

Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Population Police. He's lived his entire life in hiding, and now, with a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family's farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside.

Then, one day Luke sees a girl's face in the window of a house where he knows two other children already live. Finally, he's met a shadow child like himself. Jen is willing to risk everything to come out of the shadows -- does Luke dare to become involved in her dangerous plan? Can he afford not to?

Adult Book Group Reads The Circle for November 4th & 6th

Adult Book Group Reads "The Circle" for November 4, 2015
The Circle by Dave Eggers is the title of choice for All Booked Up in November. Beginning in November, the library will host two discussion sessions:  Wednesday, November 4th at 6:30PM and Friday, November 6th at 1:00PM. Pick the time most convienent to you and join the discussion!

Copies of the book are available on the Upper Level of the library.

About the Book
When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

Coming Clean is October's Book of the Month

"Coming Clean" is October 2015's Book of the MonthComing Clean: A Memoir by Kimberly Rae Miller is our featured novel for October. Copies are available in the "New Room" on the upper level of the library.

About the Book
Kimberly Rae Miller is an immaculately put-together woman with a great career, a loving boyfriend, and a beautifully tidy apartment in Brooklyn. You would never guess that behind the closed doors of her family’s idyllic Long Island house hid teetering stacks of aging newspaper, broken computers, and boxes upon boxes of unused junk festering in every room — the product of her father’s painful and unending struggle with hoarding.

In this dazzling memoir, Miller brings to life her experience growing up in a rat-infested home, hiding her father’s shameful secret from friends for years, and the emotional burden that ultimately led to her suicide attempt. In beautiful prose, Miller sheds light on her complicated yet loving relationship with her parents, which has thrived in spite of the odds.

Coming Clean is a story about recognizing where you come from and understanding the relationships that define you. It is also a powerful story of recovery and redemption.  (Google Books)
