Tweens Read Dead End in Norvelt for September 10th

Tweens Read "Dead End in Norvelt" for September 10, 2016Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos, is the discussion novel for September.  Page Turners, a 6th-8th grad book discussion group, gathers at the library Thursday, September 10th at 2:30PM.  Copies of the book are available in both the Teen Area and Young Readers' Room.

About the Book
Melding the entirely true and the wildly fictional, Dead End in Norvelt is a novel about an incredible two months for a kid named Jack Gantos, whose plans for vacation excitement are shot down when he is "grounded for life" by his feuding parents, and whose nose spews bad blood at every little shock he gets. But plenty of excitement (and shocks) are coming Jack's way once his mom loans him out to help a feisty old neighbor with a most unusual chore--typewriting obituaries filled with stories about the people who founded his utopian town. As one obituary leads to another, Jack is launched on a strange adventure involving molten wax, Eleanor Roosevelt, twisted promises, a homemade airplane, Girl Scout cookies, a man on a trike, a dancing plague, voices from the past, Hells Angels . . . and possibly murder.

Endlessly surprising, this sly, sharp-edged narrative is the author at his very best, making readers laugh out loud at the most unexpected things in a dead-funny depiction of growing up in a slightly off-kilter place where the past is present, the present is confusing, and the future is completely up in the air.

Kid's Book Group Reads The Terrible Two for September 16th

Kid's Book Group Reads "The Terrible Two" for September 16, 2015
Book Bunchers in grades 3-5 read The Terrible Two by Mac Barnett and Jory John and  for their September 16th gathering at 4:00.  The book discussion will be followed by a short activity. Books are available in the Young Readers' Room on the lower level of the library.

About the Book
Miles Murphy is not happy to be moving to Yawnee Valley, a sleepy town that’s famous for one thing and one thing only: cows. In his old school, everyone knew him as the town’s best prankster, but Miles quickly discovers that Yawnee Valley already has a prankster, and a great one. If Miles is going to take the title from this mystery kid, he is going to have to raise his game.

It’s prankster against prankster in an epic war of trickery, until the two finally decide to join forces and pull off the biggest prank ever seen: a prank so huge that it would make the members of the International Order of Disorder proud.

Station Eleven is the Book of the Month for August

"Station Eleven" is the Book of the Month for August 2015
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel is our featured novel for August. Copies are available in the "New Room" on the upper level of the library.

About the Book
Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.
Twenty years later, Kirsten moves between the settlements of the altered world with a small troupe of actors and musicians. They call themselves The Traveling Symphony, and they have dedicated themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the tiny band’s existence. And as the story takes off, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, the strange twist of fate that connects them all will be revealed.
