Kid's Book Group Reads Prairie Evers for June

Kid's Book Group Reads "Prairie Evers" for June 17th
Book Bunchers in grades 3-5 read Prairie Evers by Ellen Airgood for their June 17th gathering at 4:00.  The book discussion will be followed by a short activity. Books are available in the Young Readers' Room on the lower level of the library.

About the Book
Prairie Evers is finding that socialization isn't all it's cracked up to be. She's been homeschooled by her granny and has learned the most from traipsing through nature. But now she has to attend public school, and feels just like her chickens—cooped up and subject to the pecking order. School is a jolt for Prairie until she meets Ivy, her first true friend. But while raising chickens and the great outdoors have given Prairie wisdom and perspective, nothing has prepared her for the give and take of friendship. When Prairie finds out that Ivy's home may not be the best place for Ivy, Prairie must corral all her optimism and determination to hatch a plan to help.

Tweens Read Steelheart for June 11th

Tweens Read "Steelheart" for June 11, 2015
Page Turners' June selection is Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. The 6th-8th grade book discussion group meets up on Thursday, June 11th at 2:30PM.  For extra convenience, participants may ride bus # 3 from LMS to the library.

Copies of the book are available in both the Teen Area and Young Readers' Room.

About the Book
Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary people extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.

Epics are no friends of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man, you must crush his will.

Now, in what was once Chicago, an astonishingly powerful Epic named Steelheart has installed himself as emperor. Steelheart possesses the strength of ten men and can control the elements. It is said that no bullet can harm him, no sword can split his skin, and no fire can burn him. He is invincible. Nobody fights back . . . nobody but the Reckoners.

A shadowy group of ordinary humans, the Reckoners spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them. And David wants in.

When Steelheart came to Chicago, he killed David’s father. For years, like the Reckoners, David has been studying, and planning, and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He has seen Steelheart bleed.

And he wants revenge.

Eastern Coyote Presentation on Tuesday, May 19th

Eastern Coyote Presentation on Tuesday, May 19, 2015
Thousands of eastern coyotes live among us.  You may have seen or heard them in your own neighborhood.  Some fear them as predators, others are facinated by their presence and love to hear their howl.

No mater which side of the fence you sit on, you'll want to join us on Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00PM in the Campbell High School Auditorium for Becoming Wolf: The Eastern Coyote in New England.

Chris Schadler of Project Coyote discusses the facinating ecology and surprising behavior of the eastern coyote, and how we can coexist.

Schadler is the New Hampshire and Vermont Representative for Project Coyote, a national group promoting coexistence with coyotes through science, education and advocacy.  She divides her time between teaching on the NH Seacoast, working on her book and talking to groups about the eastern coyote and eastern wolf.

This event is free and open to the public.

Landline is the Book of the Month in May

Landline by Rainbow Rowell is our featured novel for May.  Copies are available in the "New Room" on the upper level of the library.

About the Book
Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble. That it's been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply--but that almost seems beside the point now.

Maybe that was always beside the point.

Two days before they're supposed to visit Neal's family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can't go. She's a TV writer, and something's come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her--Neal is always a little upset with Georgie--but she doesn't expect to him to pack up the kids and go without her.

When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she's finally done it. If she's ruined everything.

That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It's not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she's been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts. . . .

Is that what she's supposed to do?

Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?

History Buffs Read Into Africa for May

History Buffs Read "Into Africa" for May 26, 2015
Into Africa: the Epic Adventure of Stanley & Livingstone by Martin Dugard is the discussion book for the June 2nd meeting of History Buffs (Date changed as the library is closed on last Tuesday of May).  This adult book discussion group meets at 10:30AM on the 4th Tuesday of each month.

About the Book
With the utterance of a single line—“Doctor Livingstone, I presume?”—a remote meeting in the heart of Africa was transformed into one of the most famous encounters in exploration history. But the true story behind Dr. David Livingstone and journalist Henry Morton Stanley is one that has escaped telling. Into Africa is an extraordinarily researched account of a thrilling adventure—defined by alarming foolishness, intense courage, and raw human achievement.
In the mid-1860s, exploration had reached a plateau. The seas and continents had been mapped, the globe circumnavigated. Yet one vexing puzzle remained unsolved: what was the source of the mighty Nile river? Aiming to settle the mystery once and for all, Great Britain called upon its legendary explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, who had spent years in Africa as a missionary. In March 1866, Livingstone steered a massive expedition into the heart of Africa. In his path lay nearly impenetrable, uncharted terrain, hostile cannibals, and deadly predators. Within weeks, the explorer had vanished without a trace. Years passed with no word.

While debate raged in England over whether Livingstone could be found—or rescued—from a place as daunting as Africa, James Gordon Bennett, Jr., the brash American newspaper tycoon, hatched a plan to capitalize on the world’s fascination with the missing legend. He would send a young journalist, Henry Morton Stanley, into Africa to search for Livingstone. A drifter with great ambition, but little success to show for it, Stanley undertook his assignment with gusto, filing reports that would one day captivate readers and dominate the front page of the New York Herald.

Tracing the amazing journeys of Livingstone and Stanley in alternating chapters, author Martin Dugard captures with breathtaking immediacy the perils and challenges these men faced. Woven into the narrative, Dugard tells an equally compelling story of the remarkable transformation that occurred over the course of nine years, as Stanley rose in power and prominence and Livingstone found himself alone and in mortal danger. The first book to draw on modern research and to explore the combination of adventure, politics, and larger-than-life personalities involved, Into Africa is a riveting read.
