About the Book
Cinder returns in the second thrilling installment of the New York Times-bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother and the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she has no choice but to trust him, though he clearly has a few dark secrets of his own.

As Scarlet and Wolf work to unravel one mystery, they find another when they cross paths with Cinder. Together, they must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen who will do anything to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner.

History Buffs Read All the President's Men for January

All the President's Men by Carl Berstein and Bob Woodward is the discussion book for the January 27th meeting of History Buffs.  This adult book discussion group meets at 10:30AM on the 4th Tuesday of each month.

About the Book
The most devastating political detective story of the century: the inside account of the two Washington Post reporters who broke the Watergate scandal, now with a 40th anniversary Afterword on the legacies of Watergate and Richard Nixon.

This is the book that changed America. Published just months before President Nixon’s resignation, All the President’s Men revealed the full scope of the scandal and introduced for the first time the mysterious “Deep Throat.” Beginning with the story of a simple burglary at Democratic headquarters and then continuing through headline after headline, Bernstein and Woodward deliver a riveting firsthand account of their reporting. Their explosive reports won a Pulitzer Prize for The Washington Post, toppled the president, and have since inspired generations of reporters.

All the President’s Men is a riveting detective story, capturing the exhilarating rush of the biggest presidential scandal in US history as it unfolded in real time. It is, as Time magazine wrote in their All-Time 100 Best Nonfiction Books list, “the work that brought down a presidency...perhaps the most influential piece of journalism in history.”

Described as "absolutely mesmerizing" by the Chicago Sun-Times, The Final Days is a portrayal of Nixon's dramatic last days in the White House.

Book Bunch Reads Wild River for January

book cover
Book Bunchers in grades 3-5 read Wild River by P. J. Peterson for their January 21st gathering at 4:00.  The book discussion will be followed by a short activity. Books are available in the Young Readers' Room on the lower level of the library.

About the Book
When twelve-year-old Ryan reluctantly agrees to join his experienced older brother, Tanner, on a camping trip, he never dreams that it will turn into the most frightening day of his life.

Ryan admits he's no good at sports or outdoor stuff. He'd much rather be playing video games. But Tanner assures him it will be an easy trip. They'll kayak down the Boulder River, fish, and toast marshmallows at night.

When they set out, the river is higher than usual, and the kayaking is scary. Tanner keeps saying there's no reason to worry. But when he's badly hurt in a kayaking accident, Ryan is afraid he's not up to the challenge of saving his brother's life. The only danger Ryan has confronted has been in his video games. What good are those games now, when he's facing a real-life battle?

3rd Annual Polar Express was both Holly and Jolly!

photo of Santa and his elves
From bottom left: Santa with Hope, Jingle, Holly, Peppermint and Snowball.
On December 9th and 11th, the Aaron Cutler Memorial Library partnered with the Litchfield Lion’s Club to present the 3rd Annual Polar Express.

More than 120 children attended these magical story times, in which they were greeted by a train conductor, had their tickets punched, and enjoyed a cup of hot cocoa with their cookies.

And of course the reading wouldn’t have been complete without a visit from Santa and some of his elves!

See more great photos here!

Christmas at the Mysterious Bookshop is December's Book of the Month

book cover
Christmas at the Mysterious Bookshop, edited by Otto Penzler, is our featured title for December. Copies of this star reviewed novel are available in the "New Room" on the upper level of the library.

About the Book
Even readers who have never visited either location of Penzler's legendary Manhattan bookstore should enjoy these 17 short stories, each of which was originally published as a stand-alone pamphlet and given to faithful Mysterious Bookshop customers. The anthology's best tale, Lawrence Block's "As Dark as Christmas Gets," features the author's hilarious versions of Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin, eccentric rare fish collector Leo Haig and his leg man, Chip Harrison, who look into the disappearance of an unpublished Cornell Woolrich manuscript. While the many inside jokes will go over the heads of some, all will appreciate such tongue-in-cheek touches as a customer in Ed McBain's "I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus" needing reassurance that Janet Evanovich is not yet another Evan Hunter pseudonym. Other contributors include Donald E. Westlake, Mary Higgins Clark, Anne Perry, Thomas H. Cook, and S.J. Rozan. (Publishers Weekly)
