"Lovely" Letter to the Editor in February 21st Issue of HLN

Did you happen to catch the fabulously supportive Letter to the Editor in the February 21st issue of the Hudson-Litchfield News?  If not, read below:

February is Love Your Library Month

Do you love your library?  I know I do.  When I returned to Litchfield 14 years ago, I was hesitant to see what this small library could offer me and my young children.  Having moved from a bigger city with a much bigger library, I was prepared to be underwhelmed.  What I learned on my first visit and continue to see every time I visit the ACML is that it is a library that is much bigger than it seems.

Have some free time?  The variety of programs that are offered astound me- starting with story time for babies and working through the ages to book discussion groups for adults.  Plus, there are many other programs offered to patrons, including guest speakers, authors, crafting nights, and much more.

Looking for something to read?  It comes in all forms and formats at the ACML.  Whether you’re looking for a popular work of fiction, a movie on DVD, something for your eReader, or an audio book, the library has access to it.  Plus, there always are books for sale on the perpetual book sale shelf on the lower level of the library.

Need to work on project?  The library has computers available to the public and also provides free wi-fi 24/7.

Looking for a little something to do?  Check out the museum passes that are available.

If you haven’t been to the Aaron Cutler Memorial Library recently, you should stop by and check it out.  I’m hoping you’ll fall in love with your library also.

Page Turners Read Loki's Wolves for March

book cover

The Page Turners book discussion group for Tweens in grades 6-8 reads Loki's Wolves by K. L. Armstrong.  Join Miss Kerri at 2:30 on March 19th for a snack, discussion and activity. Copies of the book are available in the Teen area or Young Readers' Room.

About the Book
"The runes have spoken. We have our champion...Matthew Thorsen."

Matt hears the words, but he can't believe them. He's Thor's representative? Destined to fight trolls, monstrous wolves and giant serpents...or the world ends? He's only thirteen.

While Matt knew he was a modern-day descendent of Thor, he's always lived a normal kid's life. In fact, most people in the small town of Blackwell, South Dakota, are direct descendants of either Thor or Loki, including Matt's classmates Fen and Laurie Brekke. No big deal.

But now Ragnarok is coming, and it's up to the champions to fight in the place of the long-dead gods. Matt, Laurie, and Fen's lives will never be the same as they race to put together an unstoppable team, find Thor's hammer and shield, and prevent the end of the world.

Book Bunch Reads The One and Only Ivan for March

book cover
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is the book of choice for the March 19th gathering of Book Bunch. Bunchers in grades 3-5 will meet at 4:00 for a book discussion and quick activity. Copies of the novel are available for check-out in the lower level Young Readers' Room. New faces are always welcome!

About the Book
Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

History Buffs Read The Perfect Storm for March

book cover
The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger has been selected for the March 20th meeting of the History Buffs discussion group.  Join them at 6:30 pm!

About the Book
It was the storm of the century—a tempest created by so rare a combination of factors that meteorologists deemed it "the perfect storm."

When it struck in October, 1991, there was virtually no warning. "She's comin' on, boys, and she's comin' on strong," radioed Captain Billy Tyne of the Andrea Gail from off the coast of Nova Scotia. Soon afterward, the boat and its crew of six disappeared without a trace.

The Perfect Storm is a real-life thriller, a stark and compelling journey into the dark heart of nature that leaves listeners with a breathless sense of what it feels like to be caught, helpless, in the grip of a force beyond understanding or control.

All Booked Up Reads The Light Between Oceans for March

book cover
M. L. Stedman's The Light Between Oceans is the chosen novel for All Booked Up's next meeting on March 5th at 6:30.  Copies of the book are available at the upper level Circulation Desk.

About the Book
After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

Tell the Wolves I'm Home is February's Book of the Month

book cover
The featured novel for February is Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt.  Copies of the novel are available at the Upper Level Circulation Desk.

About the Book
This coming-of-age story reveals the striking pangs and promise of an adolescent girl's fitful awakening to adulthood. For 14-year-old June Elbus, the early death of her beloved uncle, artist Finn Weiss, blotted her world. When, shortly after the funeral, she was approached by another friend of the painter, she took comfort in their sharing of their loss. What followed though was unexpectedly intense. Rendered in the words of its main character, Carol Rifka Brunt's debut novel captures the subtle intricacies of human relationships and the rough smoothing of maturation.
