Book Bunch Reads My Life As a Book for June

book cover
My Life as a Book by Janet Tashjian has been selected for the June 19th gathering of Book Bunch.  Kids in grades 3-5 will meet at 4:00 for discussion of the book and a quick activity.  Copies of the book are available for check-out downstairs in the Young Readers' Room.

About The Book
Summer’s finally here, and Derek Fallon is looking forward to pelting the UPS truck with water balloons, climbing onto the garage roof, and conducting silly investigations. But when his parents decide to send him to Learning Camp, Derek’s dreams of fun come to an end. Ever since he’s been labeled a “reluctant reader,” his mom has pushed him to read “real” books—something other than his beloved Calvin & Hobbes.

As Derek forges unexpected friendships and uncovers a family secret involving himself (in diapers! no less), he realizes that adventures and surprises are around the corner, complete with curve balls.

Page Turners Read Schooled by Gordon Korman

 book cover
The Page Turners book discussion group for Tweens in grades 5-7 reads Schooled by Gordon Korman for their June meeting.  Stop in to pick up a copy of Schooled, then join Kerri and the group on June 13th at 2:30 for a snack, book discussion and activity.

About the Book

Capricorn Anderson had never watched a television show before. He'd never tasted a pizza. He had never even heard of a wedgie. And he had never, in his wildest dreams, thought of living anywhere but Garland Farm commune with his hippie caretaker, Rain.
Capricorn (Cap for short) had lived every day of his life on Garland Farm growing fruits and vegetables. He was homeschooled by Rain, the only person he knew in the world. Life was simple for Cap. But when Rain falls out of a tree while picking plums and is hospital-ridden, he has to attend the local middle school and live with his new guidance counselor and her irritable daughter. While Cap knew a lot about Zen Buddhism, no amount formal education could ready him for the trials and tribulations of public middle school.
Cap doesn't exactly fit in at Claverage Middle School (dubbed C Average by the kids). He has long, ungroomed hair, wears hemp clothes, and practices Tai Chi out on the lawn. His weirdness basically makes him biggest nerd in school. This is great news for Zach Powers, big man on campus.  He can't wait to instate the age-old tradition in C-Average School:  The biggest nerd is nominated for class president--and wins.  So when Cap becomes president, he is more puzzled than ever.  But as Cap begins to take on his duties, the joke starts to turn on Zach.
Will Cap turn out to be the greatest President in the history of C-Average School?  Or the biggest punchline?

All Booked Up Reads Never Have Your Dog Stuffed for May

book cover
Alan Alda's Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: and Other Things I've Learned in All Booked Up's selection for their June 5th meeting at 6:30.  Copies of Alda's personal narrative can be picked up at the upstairs Circulation Desk.

About the Book
“My mother didn’t try to stab my father until I was six,” begins Alda’s irresistible story. The son of a popular actor and a loving but mentally ill mother, he spent his early childhood backstage in the erotic and comic world of burlesque and went on, after early struggles, to achieve extraordinary success in his profession.

Yet Never Have Your Dog Stuffed is not a memoir of show-business ups and downs. It is a moving and funny story of a boy growing into a man who then realizes he has only just begun to grow.

It is the story of turning points in Alda’s life, events that would make him what he is–if only he could survive them.

From the moment as a boy when his dead dog is returned from the taxidermist’s shop with a hideous expression on his face, and he learns that death can’t be undone, to the decades-long effort to find compassion for the mother he lived with but never knew, to his acceptance of his father, both personally and professionally, Alda learns the hard way that change, uncertainty, and transformation are what life is made of, and true happiness is found in embracing them.

Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, filled with curiosity about nature, good humor, and honesty, is the crowning achievement of an actor, author, and director, but surprisingly, it is the story of a life more filled with turbulence and laughter than any Alda has ever played on the stage or screen.

The Weird Sisters is May's Book of the Month

book coverEleanor Brown's novel, The Weird Sisters, is our featured title this month.  Copies are available upstairs at the Circulation Desk.

About the Book
There is no problem that a library card can't solve.

The Andreas family is one of readers. Their father, a renowned Shakespeare professor who speaks almost entirely in verse, has named his three daughters after famous Shakespearean women. When the sisters return to their childhood home, ostensibly to care for their ailing mother, but really to lick their wounds and bury their secrets, they are horrified to find the others there. See, we love each other. We just don't happen to like each other very much. But the sisters soon discover that everything they've been running from-one another, their small hometown, and themselves-might offer more than they ever expected.

Stone Wall Presentation was Fantastic!

Kevin Gardner
Last night's presentation, Discovering Stone Walls of New England, was fantastic.  Kevin Gardner was an excellent speaker and a fount of knowledge.  Kevin discussed New Hampshire history as it relates to stone walls, the general history of stone walls, and the construction of stone walls--all while building a miniature stone wall in front of us.  The presentation concluded with a number of questions from the audience concerning stone wall maintenance, design, and history.

Copies of Gardner's book, The Granite Kiss: Traditions and Techniques of Building New England Stone Walls, were available for purchase.  (In case you're wondering, a "granite kiss" is having your fingers smashed between two stones.) Kevin quipped he wrote the book for two kinds of people: those who areinterested in building stone walls, and those who are not.

Other books recommended by Gardner available through Interlibrary Loan:

Sermons in Stone: the Stone Walls of New England and New York by Susan Allport

Stone by Stone: the Magnificent History in New England's Stone Walls by Robert Thorson

Stone in the Garden by Gordon Hayward

Good Fences: a Pictorial History of New England's Stone Walls by William Hubbell
