Join Us for Discovering New England Stone Walls on April 30th

Kevin Gardner
Have you ever come across a stone wall in the middle of nowhere and wondered why it was there?  Have you ever tried to build one of your own only to discover it's more difficult than you thought?  If you answered "yes" to one of these questions, or just have an interest in historic stone walls, join us for:

Discovering New England Stone Walls

Kevin Gardner, author of The Granite Kiss: Traditionsand Techniques of Building New England Stone Walls, delivers an informal talk touching on the history, technique, stylistic development, and aesthetics of the stone wall.

He explains how and why New England came to acquire its thousands of miles of stone wall, the ways in which they and other dry stone structures were built, how their styles emerged and changed over time, and their significance to the famous New England landscape.

Restoration tips and techniques, the differences between historical and contemporary wall-builders, along with a generous Q and A, round out the evening.

Copies of The Granite Kiss will be available for sale.

This free event is open to the public, and is co-sponsored by the Litchfield Historical Society.

From the Publisher
Zach Harriman knew that his dad was something of a hero, a man trusted by the president to solve international crises at a moment's notice. Suddenly people are telling him he has powers - people who know much more about his father than Zach ever did. But there are the Bads, who appear out of nowhere and attack him and his best friend. One thing is clear: he can do things ordinary people cannot. Like fend off grown men as though he possesses the strength of a hundred. Like sense when evil is about to strike. And evil is about to strike in a very big way. Zach Harriman is his father's son. And he, too, is a hero.

All Booked Up Reads Below Stairs for April

book cover
Below Stairs is All Booked Up's choice for April. Pick up this memoir by Margaret Powell in the "New" room upstairs, and join the discussion on Wednesday, April 3rd at 6:30 p.m.

From the Publisher
Brilliantly evoking the long-vanished world of masters and servants portrayed in Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs, Margaret Powell’s classic memoir of her time in service, Below Stairs, is the remarkable true story of an indomitable woman who, though she served in the great houses of England, never stopped aiming high. Powell first arrived at the servants' entrance of one of those great houses in the 1920s.  As a kitchen maid – the lowest of the low – she entered an entirely new world; one of stoves to be blacked, vegetables to be scrubbed, mistresses to be appeased, and bootlaces to be ironed. Work started at 5.30am and went on until after dark. It was a far cry from her childhood on the beaches of Hove, where money and food were scarce, but warmth and laughter never were. Yet from the gentleman with a penchant for stroking the housemaids’ curlers, to raucous tea-dances with errand boys, to the heartbreaking story of Agnes the pregnant under-parlor maid, fired for being seduced by her mistress’s nephew, Margaret’s tales of her time in service are told with wit, warmth, and a sharp eye for the prejudices of her situation. Margaret Powell's true story of a life spent in service is a fascinating “downstairs” portrait of the glittering, long-gone worlds behind the closed doors of Downton Abbey and 165 Eaton Place.

Join Us for Imperial Russian Faberge Eggs on March 27th

Just in time for Easter decorating inspiration! Join us at the library for Imperial Russian Fabergé Eggs on Wednesday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m.

This unique and beautifully illustrated presentation by Marina Forbes focuses on the remarkable work of Russian master jeweler and artist, Peter Carl Fabergé, who created 50 eggs for the imperial family.

Each egg included “an element of surprise—a tradition that began with the first egg, known as the Hen Egg, which Alexander III commissioned as a gift for his wife, Empress Maria Fyodorovna, for Russian Orthodox Easter. Its unadorned white enamel shell housed a yellow-gold yolk, which opened to reveal a golden hen, resting in a bed of suede edged with stippled gold, meant to evoke the straw of a hen's nest. The hen, in turn, opened to reveal the final surprise—a miniature version of the Russian imperial crown, crafted in diamonds and rubies, holding a small ruby pendant egg.” ("Fabergé, Peter Carl.Encyclopædia BritannicaEncyclopædia Britannica Online Library EditionEncyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 2013. Web. Mar. 2013.)

The program features a spectacular photo-tour of Fabergé collections at the Constantine Palace in St. Petersburg and from major museums and private collectors around the world.

Forbes will explore the important role of egg painting in Russian culture and the unique development of this major Russian art form from a traditional craft to the level of exquisite fine art under the patronage of the tsars. She will also discuss the fascinating history of these eggs, their role in the dramatic events of the last decades of Romanov rule in Russia, and in the years following the Bolshevik Revolution.

This program is made possible through a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.  Additional support is provided by the library.

Shadow of the Wind is March's Book of the Month

book cover
Carlos Ruiz Zafon's Shadow of the Wind is the Book of the Month Club's featured title in March. Copies are available at the upstairs Circulation Desk.

From the Publisher
Barcelona, 1945—just after the war, a great world city lies in shadow, nursing its wounds, and a boy named Daniel awakes on his eleventh birthday to find that he can no longer remember his mother’s face. To console his only child, Daniel’s widowed father, an antiquarian book dealer, initiates him into the secret of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a library tended by Barcelona’s guild of rare-book dealers as a repository for books forgotten by the world, waiting for someone who will care about them again. Daniel’s father coaxes him to choose a volume from the spiraling labyrinth of shelves, one that, it is said, will have a special meaning for him. And Daniel so loves the novel he selects, The Shadow of the Wind by one Julian Carax, that he sets out to find the rest of Carax’s work. To his shock, he discovers that someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book this author has written. In fact, he may have the last one in existence. Before Daniel knows it his seemingly innocent quest has opened a door into one of Barcelona’s darkest secrets, an epic story of murder, magic, madness and doomed love. And before long he realizes that if he doesn’t find out the truth about Julian Carax, he and those closest to him will suffer horribly.

About the Book
It’s the start of fifth grade for seven kids at Snow Hill School. There’s . . . Jessica, the new girl, smart and perceptive, who’s having a hard time fitting in; Alexia, a bully, your friend one second, your enemy the next; Peter, class prankster and troublemaker; Luke, the brain; Danielle, who never stands up for herself; shy Anna, whose home situation makes her an outcast; and Jeffrey, who hates school.

Only Mr. Terupt, their new and energetic teacher, seems to know how to deal with them all. He makes the classroom a fun place, even if he doesn’t let them get away with much . . . until the snowy winter day when an accident changes everything—and everyone.

But Peak quickly learns that his father's renewed interest in him has strings attached. Big strings. He wants Peak to be the youngest person to reach the Everest summit--and his motives are selfish at best. Even so, for a climbing addict like Peak, tackling Everest is the challenge of a lifetime.
