Book Bunch Reads The Bronze Pen for February

book cover
The Bronze Pen by Zilpha Keatley Snyder is the book of choice for the February 20th gathering of Book Bunch.  Bunchers in grades 3-5 will meet at 4:00 for a book discussion and quick activity.  Copies of The Bronze Pen are available for check-out downstairs in the Young Readers' Room. New members are always welcome!

About the Book
Twelve-year-old Audrey Abbott dreams of becoming a writer, but with her father's failing health and the family's shaky finances, it seems there is no room for what her overworked mother would surely call a childish fantasy. So Audrey keeps her writing a secret. That is, until she meets a mysterious old woman who seems able to read her mind. Audrey is surprised at how readily she reveals her secret to the woman.
One day the old woman gives Audrey a peculiar bronze pen and tells her to "use it wisely and to good purpose." It turns out to be just perfect for writing her stories with. But as Audrey writes, odd things start happening. Did Beowulf, her dog, just speak to her? And what is that bumping under her bed at night? It seems that whatever she writes with the pen comes true. However, things don't always happen in the way that she wants or expects. In fact, it's quite difficult to predict what writing with the pen will do. Could the pen be more of a curse than a gift? Or will Audrey be able to rewrite the future in the way that she wishes—-and save her father's life?

Braver's Tunnel Vision and Skin Deep Available for Check-Out

We are excited to have an author talk with suspense novelist Gary Braver on Wednesday, February 6th at 7:00 p.m. in the Campbell High School Music Room, and we hope you are too!

To gear up for this event, we have copies of two of Braver's 8 novels available for check-out for those of you who'd like to get familiar with his work before the talk.  But don't worry, this isn't required reading--there will be no quiz at the event.

Following the talk, Braver will have copies of his books for sale, which he will, of course, be happy to autograph.

In addition, our adult book discussion group, All Booked Up, will read Braver's Flashback for their March 6th meeting.

Available now: Tunnel Vision and Skin Deep

book cover
About Tunnel Vision.   Following a biking accident, Boston grad student Zack Kashian lapses into a coma. When he wakes up on Easter, months later, muttering the Lord’s Prayer in the original Aramaic, the media quickly anoints him the “Miracle Man.”

Zack’s revival catches the attention of a small team of neuroscientists secretly researching near-death experiences. Their objective: to determine if there is anything to the reports of floating down tunnels into celestial light and meeting spiritual beings. Is this evidence of the afterlife? Or is it just neurobiology, as Sarah Wyman, one of the young researchers, suspects?

Zack’s experiences are anything but heavenly. While he and Sarah struggle to understand his horrific out-of-body experiences, sinister forces have taken an interest in them. Forces to whom near-death experiences are utter blasphemy—deceptions created by Satan himself—and who, in the name of God, will stop at nothing to terminate the project and all involved.

book cover
About Skin Deep.  Someone is killing the most alluring women of Boston. Someone whose keen eye for beauty masks a twisted mind. Someone who insinuates himself into his victims’ lives and leaves them with nothing but an elegant black stocking knotted around their necks

Homicide detective Lieutenant Steve Markarian must stop the killer before another woman is sacrificed. The stakes increase when he realizes his own wife has caught the killer’s eye.

In this stunning psychological thriller, bestselling author Gary Braver explores the nature of beauty, and the forbidding yearnings that kill in its name.

He is the only writer to have three books listed on the Top10 highest customer rated thrillers on Amazon.com at the same time, and has optioned 3 of his novels for movies.

From Kerri on Hurt Go Happy
I’m so excited to read Hurt Go Happy by Ginny Rorby with the Page Turners this month!

It’s going to be fun and interesting to read about Joey Willis, the main character in Hurt Go Happy. Joey is 13 and has been 70% deaf since she was 6. Joey was never taught sign language, and it’s hard to read lips. I know a lot of teenagers struggle to find some sense of belonging, but I really feel for Joey. Her everyday, teenage problems are compounded by the fact that communicating is so difficult for her.

Joey’s world changes for the better when she meets an old man and his baby chimp. Her two new friends communicate using American Sign Language, and Joey secretly starts learning to sign with them.

I was drawn to this story just by reading book reviews. Now that the book is here I can’t wait to see how this unlikely friendship will change the characters.

“Thirteen-year-old Joey Willis is used to being left out of conversations. Though she's been deaf since the age of six, Joey's mother has never allowed her to learn sign language. She strains to read the lips of those around her, but often fails.
Everything changes when Joey meets Dr. Charles Mansell and his baby chimpanzee, Sukari. Her new friends use sign language to communicate, and Joey secretly begins to learn to sign. Spending time with Charlie and Sukari, Joey has never been happier. She even starts making friends at school for the first time. But as Joey's world blooms with possibilities, Charlie's and Sukari's choices begin to narrow--until Sukari's very survival is in
doubt.” (goodreads.com)

Join Us on Thursday for "Mindfulness" Program

The beginning of a new year often beckons us to make New Year's resolutions in an attempt to gain some control over challenging areas of our lives.  Instead of targeting just one area, what if you could rework the way you think and hit multiple areas at once?  Intrigued? Then the concept of mindful thinking may be for you.

Join Kate, from Yoga Balance, at the library on Thursday, January 10th, at 6:30 p.m. to find out what mindfulness is all about, and how you can begin using it to improve your overall well-being.

book cover
Cathedral of the Sea is All Booked Up's choice for February.  Pick up this novel by Ildefonso Falcones at the upstairs Circulation Desk, and join the discussion on February 13th at 6:30 p.m.

In the tradition of Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth, here is a thrilling historical novel of friendship and revenge, plague and hope, love and war, set in the golden age of 14th-century Barcelona. Arnau Estanyol arrives in Barcelona and joins the powerful guild of stone-workers building the magnificent cathedral of Santa Maria del Mar, while his adoptive brother Joan studies to become a priest. As Arnau prospers, he secretly falls in love with a forbidden woman. When he is betrayed and hauled before the Inquisitor, he finds himself face-to-face with his own brother. Will he lose his life just as his beloved cathedral is finally completed, or will his brother spare him?

Dry Grass of August is January's Book of the Month

book cover
This month's featured novel is Anna Jean Mayhew's Dry Grass of August. Copies are available at the upstairs Circulation Desk.

From the Publisher
In this beautifully written debut, Anna Jean Mayhew offers a riveting depiction of Southern life in the throes of segregation, what it will mean for a young girl on her way to adulthood--and for the woman who means the world to her. . .
On a scorching day in August 1954, thirteen-year-old Jubie Watts leaves Charlotte, North Carolina, with her family for a Florida vacation. Crammed into the Packard along with Jubie are her three siblings, her mother, and the family's black maid, Mary Luther. For as long as Jubie can remember, Mary has been there--cooking, cleaning, compensating for her father's rages and her mother's benign neglect, and loving Jubie unconditionally.
Bright and curious, Jubie takes note of the anti-integration signs they pass, and of the racial tension that builds as they journey further south. But she could never have predicted the shocking turn their trip will take. Now, in the wake of tragedy, Jubie must confront her parents' failings and limitations, decide where her own convictions lie, and make the tumultuous leap to independence. . .
Infused with the intensity of a changing time, here is a story of hope, heartbreak, and the love and courage that can transform us--from child to adult, from wounded to indomitable.
