Page Turners Read The Grimm Legacy for January

The Page Turners book discussion group for tweens in grades 5-7 is reading Polly Shulman's The Grimm Legacy for their January 10th meeting at 2:30. Bus transportation from LMS to the library is available. Pick up your copy of The Grimm Legacy in the Teen Department or in the Young Readers' Room.

About the Book
Is there a better antidote to a lonely teen existence than a dose of fairy-tale magic? Feeling left out from her stepfamily at home and from her classmates at her new school, Elizabeth is delighted when she gets a job at the New York Circulating Material Repository, a library that loans objects of historical value. Among the stacks lay Marie Antoinette’s wig, Abraham Lincoln’s hat, Sleeping Beauty’s spindle, and the evil mirror from Snow White.

How would you react if you found out that fairy tale magic was real, and that your favorite heroes and villains are not mythical, but historical figures? What would you do to protect that ancient magic from a mysterious new threat?

When magical objects start to disappear from the Grimm Collection, Elizabeth and her new friends must catch the thief in order to prove their innocence.

December Meeting Wrap-Up: The Hobbit, by JRR Tolkien.

Some readers were new to Middle-earth, and others knew the place like the back of their hand. We all enjoyed reading and re-reading The Hobbit, by JRR Tolkien.

The Page Turners met just one day before the premiere of the new movie, and we had plenty of time to spruce up our Christmas trees with our hand-made Hobbit door ornaments! Our in-depth discussion covered how Bilbo was transformed by his journey, different categories of fantasy books, and whether we would rather be a Hobbit, a Wizard, a Dwarf, or an Elf. We also relived our favorite moments and pointed out our favorite illustrations by the great Alan Lee.

Book Bunch Reads The Five Lives of Our Cat Zook for January

book cover
The Five Lives of Our Cat Zook by Joanne Rocklin is the selected title for the January 16th gathering of Book Bunch, a discussion group for kids in 3rd-5th grade.  Check-out a copy in the Young Readers' Room and join the fun at 4:00.

From the Publisher
In this warmhearted middle-grade novel, Oona and her brother, Fred, love their cat, Zook (short for Zucchini), but Zook is sick. As they conspire to break him out of the vet’s office, Oona tells the stories of his previous lives, ranging in style from fairy tale to grand epic to slice of life. Each of Zook’s lives have echoes in Oona’s own family life, which is going through a transition she’s not yet ready to face. Her father died two years ago, and her mother has started a relationship with a man named Dylan—whom Oona secretly calls “the villain.” The truth about Dylan, and about Zook’s medical condition, drives the drama in this loving family story.

Then the concept of mindful thinking may be for you.

From the Publisher
When Luke Crisp graduates from business school, his father, CEO and co-founder of Fortune 500 Crisp’s Copy Centers, is ready to share some good news: he wants to turn the family business over to his son. But Luke has other plans. Taking control of his trust fund, Luke leaves home to pursue a life of reckless indulgence.

But when his funds run out, so do his friends. Humbled, alone, and too ashamed to ask his father for help, Luke secretly takes a lowly job at one of his father’s copy centers. There he falls in love with a struggling single mother and begins to understand the greatest source of personal joy.

Lost December is Richard Paul Evans’s modernday holiday version of the biblical story of the prodigal son, a powerful tale of redemption, hope, and the true meaning of love.

The Bird Sisters is December's Book of the Month

This month's featured tale is The Bird Sisters by Rebecca Rasmussen.  Copies are available at the upstairs Circulation Desk.

From the Publisher
When a bird flies into a window in Spring Green, Wisconsin, sisters Milly and Twiss get a visit. Twiss listens to the birds' heartbeats, assessing what she can fix and what she can't, while Milly listens to the heartaches of the people who've brought them. These spinster sisters have spent their lives nursing people and birds back to health.

But back in the summer of 1947, Milly and Twiss knew nothing about trying to mend what had been accidentally broken. Milly was known as a great beauty with emerald eyes and Twiss was a brazen wild child who never wore a dress or did what she was told. That was the summer their golf pro father got into an accident that cost him both his swing and his charm, and their mother, the daughter of a wealthy jeweler, finally admitted their hardscrabble lives wouldn't change. It was the summer their priest, Father Rice, announced that God didn't exist and ran off to Mexico, and a boy named Asa finally caught Milly's eye. And, most unforgettably, it was the summer their cousin Bett came down from a town called Deadwater and changed the course of their lives forever.
