From the Publisher
This irresistible first novel tells the story of a quiet boy who embarks on a dangerous quest in order to fulfill his destiny -- and find his father -- in a strange world beneath New York City.

When Gregor falls through a grate in the laundry room of his apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland, where spiders, rats, cockroaches coexist uneasily with humans. This world is on the brink of war, and Gregor's arrival is no accident. A prophecy foretells that Gregor has a role to play in the Underland's uncertain future. Gregor wants no part of it -- until he realizes it's the only way to solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. Reluctantly, Gregor embarks on a dangerous adventure that will change both him and the Underland forever.

When eleven-year-old Gregor and his two-year-old sister are pulled into a strange underground world, they trigger an epic battle involving men, bats, rats, cockroaches, and spiders while on a quest foretold by ancient prophecy.

Page Turners Book Discussion Group for Tweens

Page Turners give two thumbs up for The Graveyard Book.
***
ThePage Turners book discussion group for tweens in grades 5-7 discussed Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book at their November 8th meeting.

The Graveyard Book takes place in a graveyard where ghosts raise a young boy in order to protect him from a murderous secret organization. Although several aspects of the book can be described as “creepy,” none of the Page Turners claimed to be frightened by the book. The book was described as being “kind of like The Jungle Book, but instead of being raised by the inhabitants of a jungle the boy is brought up by the inhabitants of a graveyard.” Our favorite characters were, curious Nobody Owens, mysterious Silas, and complicated Liza Hempstock.

Gaiman's The Graveyard Book received two thumbs up from all participating Page Turners, Last month’s Icefall by Matthew J. Kirby also met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction! Will we be able to continue this winning streak with next month selection, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien?  We will find out on the Dec 13th Page Turners meeting.

Page Turners meet on the second Thursday of each month at 2:30pm. Bus transportation from LMS to the library is available. New members are always welcome. You can pick up December's  book selection in the Young Reader’s Room or upstairs in the Teen area.

All Booked Up Reads The Thirteenth Tale for December

book cover
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield is the novel of choice for the December 5th meeting of All Booked Up.  Borrow a copy at the upstairs Circulation Desk and join the discussion at 6:30 p.m.

From the Publisher
Sometimes, when you open the door to the past, what you confront is your destiny...  Reclusive author Vida Winter, famous for her collection of twelve enchanting stories, has spent the past six decades penning a series of alternate lives for herself. Now old and ailing, she is ready to reveal the truth about her extraordinary existence and the violent and tragic past she has kept secret for so long. Calling on Margaret Lea, a young biographer troubled by her own painful history, Vida disinters the life she meant to bury for good. Margaret is mesmerized by the author's tale of gothic strangeness — featuring the beautiful and willful Isabelle, the feral twins Adeline and Emmeline, a ghost, a governess,a topiary garden and a devastating fire. Together, Margaret and Vida confront the ghosts that have haunted them while becoming, finally, transformed by the truth themselves.

Black and Blue is November's Book of the Month

book cover
This month's featured title is Anna Quindlen's Black and Blue.  Copies are available at the upstairs Circulation Desk.

From the Publisher
For eighteen years Fran Benedetto kept her secret, hid her bruises. She stayed with Bobby because she wanted her son to have a father, and because, in spite of everything, she loved him. Then one night, when she saw the look on her ten-year-old son’s face, Fran finally made a choice—and ran for both their lives.
Now she is starting over in a city far from home, far from Bobby. In this place she uses a name that isn’t hers, watches over her son, and tries to forget. For the woman who now calls herself Beth, every day is a chance to heal, to put together the pieces of her shattered self. And every day she waits for Bobby to catch up to her. Bobby always said he would never let her go, and despite the ingenuity of her escape, Fran Benedetto is certain of one thing: It is only a matter of time.
