If You Give a Pig a Pancake Came to Life

The beloved picture book character Pig came to Story Time today to meet the children.  Pig had his picture taken with the kids, gave hugs, high-fives, and did a little jig.  He came into the library to look for his favorite Mercy Watson books, but alas, they were all checked out. He then picked up his giant jug of syrup and set out for the nearest restaurant serving pancakes. And you know, if you give a pig a pancake, all sorts of things can happen...

June's Program was a Hit!

Dr. Michelle Posage of UNH Speakers Bureau
Last night, Dr. Michelle Posage of the University of New Hampshire's Speakers Bureau presented an entertaining and informative program entitled, "Are You Talking to Me? The Language of Dogs and Cats."  The Power Point and video presentation focused on the ways canines and felines communicate with us and with each other, covering body language, vocalization, and scent.

Attendees learned how to "read" their animals, taking in the overall picture, to determine whether their pet is signalling playfulness, submissiveness, conflict, contentedness, or aggression.

A few highlights I noted from the presentation include:
1.  When a cat rubs up against your leg, he is not saying, "Hey! I like you!," but rather, "Boy, you smell funny.  Let me help you out."
2.  A guilty looking dog may just be showing submission to someone who they perceive is showing aggression in the tone of their voice and stance.
3.  People who don't like cats attract them by avoiding eye contact.  Cats actually find eye contact frightening.
4.  A dog with a wagging tail doesn't mean she is friendly--it only means she is willing to interact with you.  Take a closer look at the dog to determine whether or not it's OK to approach her.

Dr. Posage has a veterinary practice in Nashua dealing exclusively with animal behavior, and teaches undergraduate courses at UNH.

This program was provided to the library free of charge by the UNH Speakers Bureau.  If you would like to learn about other programs the library offers, send us your name and email address and we will add you to our mailing list.

Page Turners Read Out of My Mind for July

book cover
The Page Turners book group for tweens in grades 5-7 is reading Out of My Mind for their July 12th meeting at 2:30.  Pick up a copy in either the Young Readers' Room or the Teen area.

Summary

Eleven-year-old Melody has a photographic memory. Her head is like a video camera that is always recording. Always. And there’s no delete button. She’s the smartest kid in her whole school—but NO ONE knows it.

Most people—her teachers and doctors included—don’t think she’s capable of learning, and up until recently her school days consisted of listening to the same preschool-level alphabet lessons again and again and again. If only she could speak up, if only she could tell people what she thinks and knows. But she can’t. She can’t talk. She can’t walk. She can’t write.

Being stuck inside her head is making Melody go out of her mind—that is, until she discovers something that will allow her to speak for the first time ever. At last Melody has a voice . . . but not everyone around her is ready to hear it.

All Booked Up Reads Remarkable Creatures for July

book coverJuly's book discussion selection is Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier.  Get your copy at the upstairs Circulation Desk, and join the group on Tuesday, July 10th @ 6:30.

From the Publisher
A voyage of discoveries, a meeting of two remarkable women, and extraordinary time and place enrich bestselling author Tracy Chevalier's enthralling new novel
From the moment she's struck by lightning as a baby, it is clear that Mary Anning is marked for greatness. On the windswept, fossil-strewn beaches of the English coast, she learns that she has "the eye"—and finds what no one else can see. When Mary uncovers an unusual fossilized skeleton in the cliffs near her home, she sets the religious fathers on edge, the townspeople to vicious gossip, and the scientific world alight. In an arena dominated by men, however, Mary is barred from the academic community; as a young woman with unusual interests she is suspected of sinful behavior. Nature is a threat, throwing bitter, cold storms and landslips at her. And when she falls in love, it is with an impossible man.
Luckily, Mary finds an unlikely champion in prickly Elizabeth Philpot, a recent exile from London, who also loves scouring the beaches. Their relationship strikes a delicate balance between fierce loyalty, mutual appreciation, and barely suppressed envy. Ultimately, in the struggle to be recognized in the wider world, Mary and Elizabeth discover that friendship is their greatest ally.
(Due to a scheduling conflict, All Booked Up meets on the 1st Tuesday in July, instead of the 1st Wednesday.)

Are You Talking to Me?: The Language of Dogs and Cats

Have you ever wondered what your pet was trying to say to you? Dog and cats are talking to us all the time, but unfortunately their message often is lost in translation. Miscommunication leads to poor training, behavior problems like aggressive behavior, and fatal blows to the human-animal bond.

Dr. Michelle Posage presents a terrific program, on Wednesday, June 20th at 6:30 p.m.,  about canine and feline communication.  She will talk about how dogs and cats  use scent, vocalization, and body language to relate to each other and to us.

This free program is made possible through the University of New Hampshire's Speakers Bureau.  Continued programs through UNH depends on attendance, so please spread the word!

Redhook Road is June's Book of the Month

book cover
This month's featured novel comes from author Ayelet Waldman. Redhook Road is available for check-out at the upstairs Circulation Desk.

From the Publisher
Set on the coast of Maine over the course of four summers, Red Hook Road tells the story of two families, the Tetherlys and the Copakens, and of the ways in which their lives are unraveled and stitched together by misfortune, by good intentions and failure, and by love and calamity.
A marriage collapses under the strain of a daughter’s death; two bereaved siblings find comfort in one another; and an adopted young girl breathes new life into her family with her prodigious talent for the violin. As she writes with obvious affection for these unforgettable characters, Ayelet Waldman skillfully interweaves life’s finer pleasures—music and literature—with the more mundane joys of living. Within these resonant pages, a vase filled with wildflowers or a cold beer on a hot summer day serve as constant reminders that it’s often the little things that make life so precious.
