Getting Teenage Boys to Read Can Be Difficult

Parents of teenage boys tell us all the time that they can’t get them interested in reading.  The folks at NoveList (a subscription website that answers the question “Help. What can I read next?”) have heard this too.

They suggest novels with a murder, disappearance, theft, or at the very least, a considerable amount of danger, to keep those boys interested.  Fast paced mysteries that put their characters in peril just might provide the right amount of tension to keep reluctant readers turning the pages.

NoveList provides these Advanced Search suggestions, in the red boxes, for finding titles that fit the bill:

Request any of the books from the results list, and we can get them either from our collection or the collection of another library.

Book Bunch Reads The Lemonade War for April 18th

book cover
The Lemonade War  by Jacqueline Davies has been selected as April's Book Bunch read. Kids in grades 3rd-5th can stop in and pick up a copy at the Circulation Desk in the Young Readers' Room, then join Miss Carrie-Anne and the gang on Wednesday, April 18th at 4:00 for discussion and fun!

From the Publisher
For a full hour, he poured lemonade. The world is a thirsty place, he thought as he nearly emptied his fourth pitcher of the day. And I am the Lemonade King.

Fourth grader Evan Treski is people-smart. He’s good at talking with people, even grownups. His younger sister, Jessie, on the other hand, is math-smart, but not especially good with people. So when the siblings’ lemonade-stand war begins, there really is no telling who will win—or even if their fight will ever end. Brimming with savvy marketing tips for making money at any business, definitions of business terms, charts, diagrams, and even math problems, this fresh, funny, emotionally charged novel subtly explores how arguments can escalate beyond anyone’s intent.

Sequels: The Lemonade Crime (Bk 2) and The Bell Bandit (Bk3)

All Booked Up Reads Unbroken for April

book cover
From the author of Seabiscuit, Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resiliance, and Redemption is available for check-out at the Upstairs Circulation Desk. Join the group on Wednesday, April 4th at 6:30 p.m. for a lively discussion of this book.

From the Publisher
On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

Breakfast with Buddha is March's Book of the Month

book cover
This month's featured novel, Breakfast with Buddha, comes from author Roland Merullo. Copies are available near the upstairs Circulation Desk. Get one while they last!

From the Publisher
The only thing certain about a journey is that it has a beginning and an end—for you never know what may happen along the way. And so it is with this journey into the minds and souls of two very different men—one of them in search of the truth, the other a man who may have already found it.

When Otto Ringling, a husband, father, and editor, departs on a cross-country drive from his home in a New York City suburb to the North Dakota farmhouse in which he grew up, he is a man on a no-nonsense mission: to settle the estate of his recently deceased parents. However, when his flaky sister convinces him to give a ride to her guru, a crimson-robed Skovordinian monk, Otto knows there will be a few bumps in the road.

As they venture across America, Otto and the affable, wise, irritating, and inscrutible holy man engage in a battle of wits and wisdom. Otto, a born skeptic, sees his unwanted passenger as a challenge: a man who assumes the knowledge of the ages yet walks a mortal's path. But he also sees their unexpected pairing as an opportunity to take Volya Rinpoche on a journey of cultural discovery, with visits to quintessentially American landmarks (the Hershey's factory, Wrigley Field) and forays into some favorite American pastimes (bowling, miniature golf, dining out).

It is Otto, however, who has embarked on the real journey, that of self-discovery, led by his strange and remarkable passenger. By the time they reach North Dakota, Otto's head is reeling with the understanding that so much of what he had believed—as well as so much of what he had doubted—must be rethought before his journey can truly begin.

Witty and inventive, Breakfast with Buddha takes readers into the heart of America and in the process shows us a man about to discover his own true heart.

There's More Than One Way to Get to the Library

March came in like a lion with a decent sized snow storm, but the parking lot was plowed early and the library was open for business right on time at 10:00 a.m.

As you might imagine, going to the library wasn't high on the list for most people today.  Kids home on vacation were more enamored with playing in the snow than reading a book.  One family, however, combined the two and snow shoed over for a visit.  Their kids had a great time, library staff loved it, and I got to post this picture. That's a win-win-win!
