A Little Book Called the Flipback

flipback book
LibraryThing’s June Newsletter reports on a new book format called the flipback. Introduced in the Netherlands, and gaining in popularity, the flipback opens and reads top to bottom, and is printed on thin bible paper. The thin paper allows the novel to be closer to the size of a cell phone, giving it high marks in portability. Its special binding also makes the flipback very flexible, allowing it the book to fall fully open without breaking the spine.

The flipback is soon to debut in the UK from publisher Hodder & Stoughton. Check out their video introduction to the flipback, then tells us if you’d like to see the flipback find its way to the US.

All Booked Up Reads The Glass Castle for July

book cover
July's book discussion selection is The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. Grab your copy at the upstairs Circulation Desk and join the group for the dissection at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6th.

From the Publisher
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.

Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town — and the family — Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.

What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

Little Bee is the Book of the Month in June

book cover
This month's featured novel comes from author Chris CleaveLittle Bee is available for checkout at the upstairs Circulation Desk.

From Amazon.com
The publishers of Chris Cleave's new novel "don't want to spoil" the story by revealing too much about it, and there's good reason not to tell too much about the plot's pivot point. All you should know going in to Little Bee is that what happens on the beach is brutal, and that it braids the fates of a 16-year-old Nigerian orphan (who calls herself Little Bee) and a well-off British couple--journalists trying to repair their strained marriage with a free holiday--who should have stayed behind their resort's walls. The tide of that event carries Little Bee back to their world, which she claims she couldn't explain to the girls from her village because they'd have no context for its abundance and calm. But she shows us the infinite rifts in a globalized world, where any distance can be crossed in a day--with the right papers--and "no one likes each other, but everyone likes U2." Where you have to give up the safety you'd assumed as your birthright if you decide to save the girl gazing at you through razor wire, left to the wolves of a failing state. (Mari Malcolm)
