A fabulously sassy and impeccably dressed pig as a matter of fact! With her insatiable urge to eat chocolate (and feed chocolate to everyone she loves), her high-flying spirit, and her unending sense of fun, Nanny Piggins takes Derrick, Samantha, and Michael on a year of surprises, yummy treats, and adventures they'll never forget.

All Booked Up Reads Three Cups of Tea for April

book cover
Get your copy of Greg Mortenson's Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time at the upstairs Circulation Desk, and join the discussion group on Wednesday, April 6th at 6:30 p.m.

From the Publisher
One day in 1993, high up in the world's most inhospitable mountains, Greg Mortenson wandered lost and alone, broken in body and spirit, after a failed attempt to climb K2, the world's deadliest peak. When the people of an impoverished village in Pakistan's Karakoram Himalaya took him in and nursed him back to health, Mortenson made an impulsive promise: He would return one day and build them a school. Although he was a homeless "climbing bum" living out of his aging Buick in Berkeley, California, Mortenson sold what few possessions he had to launch one of the most remarkable humanitarian campaigns of our time." "Three Cups of Tea traces Mortenson's decade-long odyssey to build schools, especially for girls, throughout the region that gave birth to the Taliban and sanctuary to Al Qaeda. While he wages war with the root causes of terrorism - poverty and ignorance - by providing both girls and boys with a balanced, nonextremist education. Mortenson must survive a kidnapping, fatwas issued by enraged mullahs, death threats from Americans who consider him a traitor, and wrenching separations from his family." Today, as the director of the Central Asia Institute, Mortenson has built fifty-five schools serving Pakistan and Afghanistan's poorest communities. And as this real-life Indiana Jones from Montana crisscrosses the Himalaya and the Hindu Kush fighting to keep these schools functioning, he provides not only hope to tens of thousands of children, but living proof that one passionately dedicated person truly can change the world.

The Pact is the Book of the Month for March

book coverThis month's featured novel, The Pact by Jodi Picoult, is available for check-out at the upstairs Circulation Desk.

From the Publisher
From Jodi Picoult, one of the most powerful writers in contemporary fiction, comes a riveting, timely, heartbreaking, and terrifying novel of families in anguish -- and friendships ripped apart by inconceivable violence. Until the phone calls came at 3:00 A.M. on a November morning, the Golds and their neighbors, the Hartes, had been inseparable. It was no surprise to anyone when their teenage children, Chris and Emily, began showing signs that their relationship was moving beyond that of lifelong friends. But now seventeen-year-old Emily has been shot to death by her beloved and devoted Chris as part of an apparent suicide pact -- leaving two devastated families stranded in the dark and dense predawn, desperate for answers about an unthinkable act and the children they never really knew

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

nea cat in hat logo
In honor of the birthday of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day, let's all take the Reader's Oath:

I promise to read
Each day and each night.
I know it’s the key
To growing up right.

I’ll read to myself,
I’ll read to a crowd.
It makes no difference
If silent or loud.

I’ll read at my desk,
At home and at school,
On my bean bag or bed,
By the fire or pool.

Each book that I read
Puts smarts in my head,
‘Cause brains grow more thoughts
The more they are fed.

So I take this oath
To make reading my way
Of feeding my brain
What it needs every day.
Words by Debra Angstead
Missouri-National Education Association

Now go forth and read!

In case you're not familiar with this particular publication, the Town Reports contain annual reports from all town departments, as well as each school and the SAU.

What local organizations worked with the Recreation Commission?  How many tons of cardboard was collected at the Transfer Station? What land was purchased by the Conservation Commission?  How many audiobooks are available for free download at the library? Who got married? Gave birth? I could go on and on.  It's all in there!

The Town Reports also include deliberative session minutes, election results, and financial reports for both the town and the school district.

Town Reports are also available online, at Town Hall, through the schools, and at the polls on March 8th.
