Looking for Legos

Lego image courtesy of terry on sxc.hu
Hmmm... With the new year comes new ideas, and I'm hoping to start a monthly Lego night, but I need your help!

When you're cleaning out the closets and all the old toys (probably to make room for the new ones), don't get rid of those Legos. Drop them off at the library! Once we have enough, we'll let the fun begin.

Holiday Fun

What's better than the holiday vacation and the kids being home from school for the week? Why it's having fun (and free) activities at your library! Kids aged 3-11 are welcome to stop by the library this week, whether to add to their already exciting vacation, or for a boredom-buster!

Tuesday the 28th from 10am-3pm kids are welcome to stop in for some "snowy" crafting fun.

Wednesday the 29th from 11am-3pm join us every hour on the hour to hear some of your favorite fairy tales or folktales.

Thursday the 30th from 1-6pm we're gonna make some noise -- New Year's Eve noisemakers that is!

Plan on stopping in for one of these fun activities -- or all three! Just plan to be here!

Annual Holiday Gingerbread Winners Announced

Grand Prize Winner--The Corbett Family
There were 18 scrumptious entries in this year's Holiday Gingerbread Contest.  Our panel of judges rated all 18 based on use of materials and imagination and came up with 5 winners:

The Corbett Family--Grand Prize Winner
The Mycroft Family--Family Entry
Kamryn Ford--Age 9-12 Entry
Regan Theberge--Age 6-8 Entry
Cayla & Riley Leon-Guerrero--Age 3-5 Entry

All entries have been on display in the Young Readers' Room since the contest deadline on December 14th.  If you haven't seen them, not to worry--they can all be viewed online as well.

Entries can be picked up starting tomorrow to be enjoyed at home over the holiday.  On the one hand, we'll be sad to see them go as they're so much fun to look at, but on the other hand it's been very difficult to work in the Young Readers' Room with the sweet smell of candy and frosting continually in the air!

Great Time at Santa's Workshop

children selecting books
Eager children selecting their books.
Library Trustee Gail Musco and I attended the Litchfield Women's Club's Santa's Workshop yesterday at Litchfield Middle School.  As part of the event, we gave away children's books to all those in attendance, and gave residents the opportunity to sign up for library cards.  When all was said and done, we gave away 133 books!  Many thanks to the anonymous donor, our Book Elf, who generously donated the books we gave away.

All Booked Up Reads The Necklace for January

book cover
Get your copy of The Necklace by Cheryl Jarvis and join the discussion on Wednesday, January 5th at 6:30 p.m.  Copies are available at the upstairs Circulation Desk.

From the Publisher
One day in Ventura, California, Jonell McLain saw a beautiful diamond necklace in a jewelry store window and wondered: Why are personal luxuries so plentiful yet accessible to so few? What if we shared what we desired? Several weeks, dozens of phone calls, and one great leap of faith later, Jonell and twelve other women bought the necklace together–to be passed along among them all.

The dazzling treasure weaves in and out of each woman’s life, reflecting her past, defining her present, making promises for her future. Lending sparkle in surprising and unexpected ways, the necklace comes to mean something dramatically different to each of the thirteen women. With vastly dissimilar histories and lives, they transcend their individual personalities and politics to join together in an uncommon journey–and what started as a quirky social experiment becomes something far richer and deeper.

Honolulu is the Book of the Month in December

book cover
This month, read Honolulu by novelist Alan Brennert.  Copies are available at the Circulation Desk while supplies last.

From Barnes and Noble
As a young Korean woman at the onset of 20th century, Regret knows that there is only one possible avenue to the education she seeks. She must become a mail-order bride. She travels to Hawaii to meet the man she has agreed to marry, but it becomes apparent all too quickly that he is not the genteel, prosperous young man she imagined he would be. Instead, she finds herself yoked to an impoverished plantation worker addicted to alcohol and gambling. Her painful situation forces her to fend for herself and form beneficial alliances with other "picture brides." This powerful historical novel draws you into the plight of a woman swimming in the uncertainty of a new culture.
