Another Use For Your Library Card...

library card and key tagHoming device. That's right. A patron was reunited with her keychain yesterday after someone found her keys and left them in our book return. How'd she know to do that? She saw our READ 4 THe FuN oF iT key tag and knew we'd be able to use the card number to find the owner of the keys. The next morning we retrieved the keys, looked up the patron, and reunited her with her key ring. Another great reason to have a library card!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover Was Lots of Fun!

animal story timeThe children tucked their stuffed animals in the for the night before heading home, but the animals didn't stay that way for long. I guess they were just too excited to sleep!

Miss Carrie-Anne reports they were up and about for quite some time before she was able to get them to settle down and go back to sleep. They played Hide-n-Go Seek, made crafts, had races, and much more.

Luckily Miss Carrie-Anne took lots of pictures. Watch the slideshow to see what your animal was up to.

Donate Your Gently Used Books

book pile photo courtesy of The_Beast on FlickrThis is the time of the year when people begin their Spring cleaning projects. We get many calls from residents asking if we take book donations. We do accept donations of no more than 3 reasonably sized boxes of gently used books and audio/visual materials, with the following guidelines:

We love to receive current popular titles in print, audio, or DVD.

We gladly accept adult/teen/children's fiction, classics, non-fiction less than 10 years old, and CD/DVD recordings in original packaging with artwork.

We cannot accept textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines, condensed books, Harlequin series romance novels, non-fiction more than 10 years old, videotapes, cassettes, and CD/DVD recordings without original packaging and artwork.

We also cannot accept any items in poor condition with discolored/highlighted/torn pages, missing covers, mildew/smoke odor, stains, bugs, or water damage.

Once we receive your donations, we look for items that meet our material selection criteria for use in the library. All remaining items may be donated to the Friends of the Library book sales, given to other libraries or charitable organizations, etc.

If you would like to donate your gently used books, you may drop them off during regular business hours. Happy cleaning!

All Booked Up Reads Outliers for May

book coverMalcolm Gladwell's book, Outliers: The Story of Success, is the book club choice for May. Pick up a copy at the Circulation Desk and join the group on Wednesday, May 5th at 6:30p.m. for a great discussion.

From the Publisher
In this stunning new audiobook, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band. Brilliant and entertaining, OUTLIERS is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.

The House at Riverton is the Book of the Month in April

book coverThe House at Riverton by Kate Morton is our featured novel for the month of April. Stop by the library and grab your copy while supplies last!

From the Publisher:
Grace Bradley went to work at Riverton House as a servant when she was just a girl, before the First World War. For years her life was inextricably tied up with the Hartford family, most particularly the two daughters, Hannah and Emmeline.

In the summer of 1924, at a glittering society party held at the house, a young poet shot himself. The only witnesses were Hannah and Emmeline and only they-and Grace-know the truth.

In 1999, when Grace is ninety-eight years old and living out her last days in a nursing home, she is visited by a young director who is making a film about the events of that summer. She takes Grace back to Riverton House and reawakens her memories. Told in flashback, this is the story of Grace's youth during the last days of Edwardian aristocratic privilege shattered by war, of the vibrant twenties, and the changes she witnessed as an entire way of life vanished forever.

The novel is full of secrets-some revealed, others hidden forever, reminiscent of the romantic suspense of Daphne Du Maurier. It is also a meditation on memory, the devastation of war, and a beautifully rendered window into a fascinating time in history.

Originally published to critical acclaim in Australia, already sold in ten countries and a #1 bestseller in England, The House at Riverton is a vivid, page-turning novel of suspense and passion, with characters-and an ending-the reader won't soon forget.
