It's a Stuffed Animal Sleepover!

bunny photo courtesy of biewoef on sxc.huNational Library Week is April 11th through 17th, and this year's theme is "Communities thrive @ your library." To celebrate our sense of community, we're planning a Stuffed Animal Sleepover on Thursday, April 15th!

Kids can drop off one of their favorite stuffed animals (but not the one THEY NEED to sleep with) any time between 5 & 7pm. We'll be reading a few bedtime stories at 6:30pm, and we'll probably want to sing a lullaby or two so all the animals will sleep well. Then after we tuck all of them in, off the children go... Don't worry, your animals will be safe with me (I just hope I'm safe with them)!

When you return the next morning (anytime after 10am) to pick up your stuffed animal, I'll tell you all about our exciting sleepover!

I'm looking forward to making lots of new snuggly friends...

To Kill a Mockingbird is the Book of the Month in March

book coverPick up a copy of this month's featured novel, and the NH Big Read, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

From Amazon.com:
Set in the small Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird follows three years in the life of 8-year-old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus--three years punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman. Though her story explores big themes, Harper Lee chooses to tell it through the eyes of a child. The result is a tough and tender novel of race, class, justice, and the pain of growing up.

Like the slow-moving occupants of her fictional town, Lee takes her time getting to the heart of her tale; we first meet the Finches the summer before Scout's first year at school. She, her brother, and Dill Harris, a boy who spends the summers with his aunt in Maycomb, while away the hours reenacting scenes from Dracula and plotting ways to get a peek at the town bogeyman, Boo Radley. At first the circumstances surrounding the alleged rape of Mayella Ewell, the daughter of a drunk and violent white farmer, barely penetrate the children's consciousness. Then Atticus is called on to defend the accused, Tom Robinson, and soon Scout and Jem find themselves caught up in events beyond their understanding. During the trial, the town exhibits its ugly side, but Lee offers plenty of counterbalance as well--in the struggle of an elderly woman to overcome her morphine habit before she dies; in the heroism of Atticus Finch, standing up for what he knows is right; and finally in Scout's hard-won understanding that most people are essentially kind 'when you really see them.'

All Booked Up Reads Eye Contact for April

The adult book discussion group has selected Eye Contact for their April meeting. Pick up a copy and join the gang at the library at 6:30 p.m. on April 7th.

From the Publisher
Cammie McGovern's breakout novel is at once a hypnotic thriller and an affecting portrait of people as real as our next-door neighbors. In Eye Contact, two children vanish in the woods behind their elementary school. Hours later, nine-year-old Adam is found alive, the sole witness to his playmate's murder. But because Adam has autism, he is a silent witness. Only his mother, Cara, can help decode his behavior for the police. As the suspense ratchets, Eye Contact becomes a heart-stopping exploration of the bond between a mother and a very special child.
