Author Dick Francis Dies at Age 89

photo of dick francisWell it looks like I've lost another favored author. Dick Francis, who introduced me to the world of British horse racing in the 26+ books of his that I have read, died today at the age of 89. Once a champion steeplechase jockey, he went on to write 42 mystery novels, and each time I picked one up, I knew I would enjoy it. I will miss adding his books to our collection at the library.

Meg Cabot and Twitter

photo of Meg Cabot by Ali Smith courtesy of Harper CollinsI just read a blog post on BBC Audiobooks America about an interesting novel writing project on Twitter:

"Starting February 16 at Noon EST, author Meg Cabot (@megcabot) will launch a special interactive storytelling experience. She'll tweet the first line of an original tale and then the rest is up to you! Just login to your Twitter account (registration is free) to tweet your own suggested sentence to continue the tale." read the rest of the story here

BBC Audiobooks America's first Twitter tale, Hearts, Keys, and Puppetry, was lead off by author Neil Gaiman with the sentence, "Sam was brushing her hair when the girl in the mirror put down the hairbrush, smiled, and said, "We don't love you anymore."" With the help of many Tweeters, an epic tale took shape and is now available for free download on the BBCAA web site or from iTunes.

Round two is your chance to help shape a new tale. Why not get your imagination ready and give it a try!

All Booked Up Reads To Kill a Mockingbird for March

book coverAll Booked Up is participating in the New Hampshire Big Read in March by reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Get your copy at the Circulation Desk, and join the discussion on Wednesday, March 3rd at 6:30 pm.

From the Publisher
The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill A Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic.

Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, To Kill A Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior - to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos. Now with over 18 million copies in print and translated into forty languages, this regional story by a young Alabama woman claims universal appeal. Harper Lee always considered her book to be a simple love story. Today it is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature.

Carpe Demon is the Book of the Month in February

book coverPick up a copy of this month's featured novel, Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom, by Julie Kenner.

From Publisher's Weekly
Lots of women put their careers aside once the kids come along. Kate Connor, for instance, hasn't hunted a demon in ages. That must be why she missed the one wandering through the pet food aisle of the San Diablo Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, he managed to catch her attention an hour later-when he crashed into the Connor house, intent on killing her.

Now Kate has to clean up the mess in her kitchen, dispose of a dead demon, and pull together a dinner party that will get her husband elected to County Attorney-all without arousing her family's suspicion. Worse yet, it seems the dead demon didn't come alone... It's time for Kate Connor to go back to work.

If you like this title, try the other 4 in the series: California Demon, Demons Are Forever, Deja Demon, and Demon Ex Machina.
