Electrical Storm Woes

image courtesy of imagechef.comSaturday's electrical storm fried our network here at the library. Nothing our IT guy and a wad of cash couldn't fix. The network is up and running again, so you should have no problem accessing the web catalog, unless you're using the wrong web address. The new router picked up a new IP address, so if you have the web catalog bookmarked, you'll want to update that to: http://75.67.231.143:85/winnebago/search/search.asp?lib=4576.

All Booked Up Reads A Year in Provence for September

book coverPick up a copy of Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence and join the discussion on Wednesday, September 2nd at 6:30 p.m.

From the Publisher...
In this witty and warm-hearted account, Peter Mayle tells what it is like to realize a long-cherished dream and actually move into a 200-year-old stone farmhouse in the remote country of the Lubéron with his wife and two large dogs. He endures January's frosty mistral as it comes howling down the Rhône Valley, discovers the secrets of goat racing through the middle of town, and delights in the glorious regional cuisine. A Year in Provence transports us into all the earthy pleasures of Provençal life and lets us live vicariously at a tempo governed by seasons, not by days.

Rolling Stone On The Magazine Stand

Rolling Stone is a newcomer to our magazine stand this year. This month’s cover story is the ever popular boy band the Jonas Brothers, sure to be a crowd-pleaser with your younger daughters and their friends. With six pages devoted to the band, you get a real taste of what they are like in person.

I, however, being a seasoned rock fan, enjoyed the article on the recent Aerosmith tour stop at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA. Joe Perry is reported to have the phrase "I read a lot of historical novels" air brushed on their tour bus. (I'm always on the lookout for avid readers!) They devoted a good portion of the show to playing songs from their "album" Toy's In the Attic, peaking with a guitar solo by Perry during Sweet Emotion. This was one of the first records I bought with my own money as a kid. Am I dating myself?

If you can remember Woodstock, or hearing about it from relatives, be sure to read the article about the new book The Road To Woodstock by Michael Lang. He and former Rolling Stone editor George Waren relied on interviews with musicians and co-workers, audio tapes from the festival, and documentation from old files to jog their memories of 40 yrs ago. Greats like Jim Morrison passed on playing at the festival for fear of being assassinated on stage, and John Lennon couldn't make it due to an earlier drug bust that prevented him from traveling to America. However, the legend Jimi Hendrix did play and demanded $30,000 and a pound of cocaine to be donated to the crew on the first morning. As the 40th year anniversary approaches, Michael Lang seems to be trying to pull together another concert for late September, even though performers have yet to be invited. Can he pull it off again? We'll all have to wait and see.

Rolling Stone is also available full-text through MasterFile Premier from August 1990 to the present. Contact us for log-in information.

Skinny Dip is the Book of the Month in August

book coverSkinny Dip is our featured novel for August. Pick up a copy and get lost in the Everglades in this screwball story by comic novelist Carl Hiaasen. Using Hiaasen's website, answer the handful of short questions included with the book and earn 1 weekly raffle ticket in the Get Your Green On summer reading club.

Kirkus Reviews had this to say...
Florida's preeminent satirist returns from a YA excursion (Hoot, 2002) to ask the eternal question: What happens when the wife you've killed isn't dead? Joey Perrone can't imagine why her husband married her or why he wanted to kill her. But it's too late to ask now that Joey's struggling to stay afloat several stories below the ship deck he pushed her from during their anniversary cruise. She doesn't know that Chaz was afraid his wife had discovered that he was nothing but big-ticket farmer Red Hammernut's "biostute," a State of Florida biological inspector who was faking the results of phosphate testing in order to give Red's mega-polluting farm a clean bill of health. Now that she's presumed dead, Joey and Mick Stranahan, the State's Attorney's investigator who's been pensioned off to the middle of nowhere so that he can rescue her, have all the time in the world to figure out why Chaz wanted to get rid of Joey and what naughty games he's been up to. Their interventions soon escalate from creepy pranks against the grieving widower to a blackmail demand backed up by a faked video of the murder. Meanwhile, Det. Karl Rolvaag, the investigator who's counting the days till he can leave South Florida and return to frigid Minnesota, develops suspicions of his own about Ricca Spillman, the stylist who's been solacing Chaz. And Earl Edward O'Toole, the apelike minder Hammernut has hung around Chaz's neck, begins to move beyond inarticulate resentment at the bullet lodged in his butt-crease when he's befriended by an elderly cancer patient whose Fentanyl patch he's swiping. The crew is rounded out by the usual cargo of zanies, with Hiaasen's signature attention to nonhuman members of the cast. "Ihad a feeling he didn't love me any more," muses bobbing Joey, "but this is ridiculous." It's also bitingly satirical, sublimely zany, and deeply satisfying.
