Family Circle on the Magazine Stand
In this months issue of Family Circle Magazine you can find "The Secret to Less Stress." I think by far the biggest complaint of most parents that I have talked to recently is that they are stretched too thin and have over scheduled themselves and their children. In the article "Retreat Yourself" you can learn some quick tips that will bring you back to a more relaxed state of mind. "If you're not healthy physically, emotionally, and spiritually, you can't be as effective when you're helping others." You must be willing to take some time for you self on a regular basis, it could be 5 minutes or 15 minutes. Decide where this will be, plan when, choose a purpose, and establish rituals for this time to yourself. Do something you enjoy, listen to favorite music, meditate, or go for a walk. When you start to treat yourself better you will find that you will also treat others better too! Read the complete article in the June issue of Family Circle.

Flume Award Winner Announced
Jodi Picoult's Nineteen Minutes is the 2009 Flume Award winner!
In Nineteen Minutes, Picoult takes on the hot-button issue of high school shootings. "Peter Houghton, an alienated teen who has been bullied for years by the popular crowd, brings weapons to his high school in Sterling, N.H., one day and opens fire, killing 10 people. Flashbacks reveal how bullying caused Peter to retreat into a world of violent computer games. Alex Cormier, the judge assigned to Peter's case, tries to maintain her objectivity as she struggles to understand her daughter, Josie, one of the surviving witnesses of the shooting. The author's insights into her characters' deep-seated emotions brings this ripped-from-the-headlines read chillingly alive." (Publisher's Weekly)
New Hampshire Teens in grades 9-12 voted on a list of 12 titles including:
City of Bones (2nd Place)
Glass (3rd Place)
Story of a Girl
Death Note, Vol. 7
Big Papi
Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac
Raven's Gate
Road of the Dead
Terrier
Harmless
Tasting the Sky
Snowflower and the Secret Fan

All Booked Up Reads The Historian for June
Elizabeth Kostova's novel, The Historian, is All Booked Up's choice for their June 3rd meeting.
When a motherless American girl living in Europe finds a medieval book and a package of letters, all addressed ominously to "My dear and unfortunate successor..." she begins to unravel a thread that leads back to her father's past, his mentor's career, and an evil hidden in the depths of history.
In those few quiet moments, she unwittingly assumes a quest she will discover is her birthright -- a hunt that nearly brought her father to ruin and may have claimed the life of his adviser and dear friend, history professor Bartholomew Rossi. What does the legend of Vlad the Impaler, the historical Dracula, have to do with the 20th century? Is it possible that Dracula has lived on in the modern world? And why have a select few historians risked reputation, sanity, and even their lives to learn the answer?
So begins an epic journey to unlock the secrets of the strange medieval book, an adventure that will carry our heroine across Europe and into the past -- not only to the times of Vlad's heinous reign, but to the days when her mother was alive and her father was still a vibrant young scholar. In the end, she uncovers the startling fate of Rossi, and comes face to face with the definition of evil -- to find, ultimately, that good may not always triumph. (Synopsis from Barnes and Noble.)

Amy and Isabelle is the Book of the Month in May
Amy and Isabelle, by Pulitzer Prize winning author Elizabeth Strout, is our featured novel for the month of May. Get your copy at the Circulation Desk.
Elizabeth Strout's remarkably assured debut novel, Amy and Isabelle, is an exquisitely nuanced exploration of the complex relationship between a single mother and her teenage daughter. Shy, sensitive Amy Goodrow leads a cloistered existence with her mother, Isabelle, in a small New England mill town. For years, Isabelle has stoically endured the emotional emptiness of her life and unfulfilling secretarial job, secure in the knowledge that "her real life would happen somewhere else." But when Amy falls in love with her high school math teacher and crosses the line between adolescent fantasy and disturbing reality, she releases Isabelle's intense shame about her own past and opens an unbridgeable distance between them.
