The Puppetmaster Contest!

paperbag puppets photo courtesy of autumndrygn on flickrKids -- Make a paper bag puppet of your favorite storybook character or animal and join our Puppetmaster Contest in the Young Readers' Room! Contest begins on May 1st, and all entries are due at the library by 6pm on May 22nd.

Once you've decided who (or what) you'd like to make, you just start with a paper lunch bag. Next you'll need imagination - - you can use crayons, construction paper, felt, yarn, feathers, whatever materials you'd like - - and turn that lunch bag into a handy puppet! (Make sure when you place your hand in the paper bag puppet, that your fingers fit around the inside flap so you can make him talk. I want to hear what all the puppets have to say!)

- Winners will be selected based on imagination and neatness.

- Entries will be separated into 3 age categories: 3-5 years, 6-8 years, and 9-11 years.

- Winners will be notified by May 27th.

Summertime... and the Reading is Easy!

summer reading logoPlans for our Summer Reading Club for kids are well underway, and we have LOTS of fun planned for this summer. The kids' program, Summertime and the Reading is Easy, will run from June 30th through August 8th. Registration begins June 16th.

We already have some visits planned for the program. You won't want to miss Super-Why... or Stitches (the mascot from the American Defenders baseball team)... and who wouldn't want to see snakes and lizards and alligators up close? Reptiles on the Move is scheduled to be here one evening in late July!

And as if that isn't enough, we haven't even mentioned the story times and craft clubs and games! We're looking forward to a fabulous summer... You know, summertime and the reading is easy...

April is National Poetry Month

national poetry month logoWhen is the last time you read a poem? If you can't remember, then now is the perfect time to rectify that situation!

National Poetry Month is a month-long celebration established by the Academy of American Poets in an effort to bring attention to the art of poetry and the poets who create them. The Academy has developed a list of 30 Ways to Celebrate ranging from the obvious (read a book of poetry), to the stealthy (put a poem on the pavement), to the more daring (read a poem at an open mic). Check out the list and let us know what you do to celebrate by clicking on "comments" below!

All Booked Up Reads Tall Pine Polka for May

Lorna Landvik's Tall Pine Polka provides fodder for discussion for the upcoming May 6th meeting of All Booked Up. To make things extra special, the group will also speak with Landvik during the meeting via telephone!

In Tall Pine Polka, "Landvik invites readers to belly up to the counter and join the regulars sipping coffee at Cup O'Delight Caf in Tall Pine, Minn. In this swift-moving romp, Lee O'Leary, the Cup O'Delight owner, is a 210-lb., 40-year-old redhead who fetched up in this north woods tourist town three years ago while fleeing her abusive stockbroker husband. Lee's coffee shop is the daily rendezvous for idiosyncratic locals: shoemaker Pete, suffering unrequited love for Lee; Mary Gore, famous for her bad poetry; Slim, the barking 'Nam vet; and lesbian couple Frau Katte and Miss Penk. When Hollywood invades Tall Pine, the eccentric population triples. Location scouts for a grade-B flick, Ike and Inga, find their perfect leading lady in the book's central figure, 22-year-old Fenny Ness. Ever since her adventurous parents died in an accident in Belize, Fenny has run the local bait and craft shops. Fenny is reluctant, but her friends persuade her to take the Hollywood plunge. Lacking guile or malice, plainspoken Fenny transforms the Hollywood types, standing up to a tyrannical director, flooring more than one nasty talk-show host, and making life-long friends of the other actors. Meanwhile, Fenny struggles to win and keep the man she loves: Big Bill, a half-Polynesian, half-Chippewa musician and athlete, who floats into town to reconnect with his Indian heritage and stirs up romantic rivalries between Fenny and Lee." (From Publisher's Weekly, Sept. 1999)

Pick up your copy at the Main Desk and join the group at the library on Wednesday, May 6th at 6:15 p.m. Please note this is 15 minutes earlier than usual to give everyone time to settle in before the author call at 6:30 p.m.

Coming up next: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

Patty Jane's House of Curl is the Book of the Month in April

book coverOur featured novel is Patty Jane's House of Curl by Lorna Landvik. Copies are available now at the Circulation Desk.

About the Book: Patty Jane Dobbin should have known better than to marry a man as gorgeous as Thor Rolvaag, but she was too smitten to think twice. Yet nine months into their marriage, with a baby on the way, Thor is gone. It's a good thing Patty Jane has her irrepressible sister, Harriet, to rely on. For it's been said that a fine haircut can cure any number of ills, and before long the Minnesota sisters have opened a neighborhood beauty parlor complete with live harp music and an endless supply of delicious Norwegian baked goods. It's a wonderful, warmhearted place where you can count on good friends, lots of laughter, tears, and comfort when you need it--and the unmistakable scent of somebody getting a permanent wave. . .
