Consumer Reports on the Magazine Stand
This month’s magazine pick is Consumer Reports. The March 2009 cover story is Best TVs, giving great advice for the budget buyer, movie lover, sports fan, or the techie. The magazine’s signature ratings section can help you choose the right set with the options that you value most. With the trend toward more at home movie viewing, another popular option that’s easy on the wallet is rental services, such as Netflix, Redbox, and Blockbuster Total Access. Find out how movie walk-in-chains and subscription services rate with Consumer Reports. Need to trim the fat on the cable bill? Don’t miss 5 Ways to Cut Cable Costs.
In addition to TVs, this issue has some great articles on what we feed our pets, who is qualified to prepare our taxes, and financial traps to watch out for. It wouldn’t be a Consumer Reports magazine without car reviews on subcompact cars, small cars, scooters and motorcycles. Additional reviews on interior paints, coffee, sewing machines, and vacuum cleaners can also be found. Happy reading!!
Consumer Reports is also available full-text through MasterFile Premier. Contact us for log-in information.

All Booked Up Reads Water for Elephants for March
Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants is the topic of discussion for the March 4th meeting of All Booked Up.
An atmospheric, gritty, and compelling novel of star-crossed lovers, set in the circus world circa 1932, by the bestselling author of Riding Lessons. When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, drifters, and misfits, a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. A veterinary student who almost earned his degree, Jacob is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her.Beautifully written, Water for Elephants is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place. It tells a story of a love between two people that overcomes incredible odds in a world in which even love is a luxury that few can afford. (From the Publisher)

Women of the Silk is the Book of the Month in February
Our featured novel for the month of February is Women of the Silk by Gail Tsukiyama.
In Women of the Silk Gail Tsukiyama takes her readers back to rural China in 1926, where a group of women forge a sisterhood amidst the reeling machines that reverberate and clamor in a vast silk factory from dawn to dusk. Leading the first strike the village has ever seen, the young women use the strength of their ambition, dreams, and friendship to achieve the freedom they could never have hoped for on their own. Tsukiyama's graceful prose weaves the details of "the silk work" and Chinese village life into a story of courage and strength. (From the Publisher)
Copies are available now at the Main Circulation Desk.
