Health on the Magazine Stand

magazine coverWith winter now upon us and the snow piling up in our driveways, we all start to spend a little less time braving the elements and more time curled up in front of the TV. Why not stop by the library and see what is new to check out! One of the overlooked areas of the library is our magazine stand. We currently subscribe to twenty eight different publications, with new issues arriving all the time.

Health magazine is a great monthly to browse through after you have made all your New Years resolutions and need a plan to keep them. Whether you are interested in loosing weight or just plain taking better care of yourself, this is the magazine for you.

In the January/February issue, learn how to make relaxing spa potions for your tub that will hydrate & smooth your skin (pg. 135). Sore muscles from all that working out you’ve been doing since January 1st? There is a recipe for that too! If you choose to go to the salon instead and have someone else pamper you, read some questions to ask and tips you should know to keep yourself well informed about the dangers that may be lurking around the salon (pg.127). “Amazing abs. Graceful legs. A tight, toned butt. Reinvent your shape with the celebrity trainers’ best moves” (pg.143). Find out all about this workout and more in this month's issue of Health magazine. Catch it while it’s hot!

Health is also available full-text through MasterFile Premier. Contact us for log-in information.

Try LookyBook.com for Kids

LookyBook is a neat website for kids containing over 300 picture books available for online viewing, searchable by title, author, illustrator, subject, or genre. The idea is that you'll try them out and buy the ones you like.

For instance, I was able to view Skippyjon Jones, by Judy Schachner, in its entirety, read a description of the book, review comments made by 16 other LookyBookers, and find several places to purchase the book online. While this particular book is not shown large enough to read all of the words, I got a pretty good feel for the what the book is like. (Other picture books are readable.) I then decided to set up a personal bookshelf so I can keep track of the titles I enjoy. To do so required that I sign-up with LookyBooks free registration. Once registered, I can also make comments on titles, email titles to friends, and share titles through several different social networking sites. I was also able to embed Skippyjon Jones to this post as seen above.

All in all, a fun little website for trolling the picture book market.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven is the Book of the Month in January

Our featured book for the month of January is The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom.

From the author of the phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie, a novel that explores the unexpected connections of our lives, and the idea that heaven is more than a place; it's an answer. Eddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his "meaningless" life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: "Why was I here?" (From the Publisher)

Copies are available now at the Main Circulation Desk.

Writing with the same emotional intensity that distinguishes his news broadcasts, CNN journalist Anderson Cooper describes his powerful personal reaction to the tragic events of 2005 -- a year that brought a tsunami to Asia, escalating violence to Iraq, famine to Africa, and two devastating hurricanes to the United States. (from Barnes & Noble)

Pick up your copy at the Main Desk and join the group at the library on Wednesday, February 4th at 6:30 p.m.
