Downloadable Audiobook Patrons Will Need New Cards

As patrons visit the library, they are being asked to trade-in their old paper library cards for our new credit-card style cards. If you're a downloadble audiobook fan, you definitely need to do this soon. The 8 digit library card number that you've been using will be valid only through May 1st. After that, the New Hampshire Downloadable Audiobook system will require the new 14 digit number.

All it takes to get your new card is your driver's license and a few minutes to update your application. Once you have your new card, you won't have to worry about your service being interrupted after May 1st.

If you are one of them, you've probably noticed you are no longer getting updates. That's because your Adelphia address expired in January, and messages sent to it are no longer being forwarded to your new Comcast address. All Booked Up Reads The Book of Ruth for April

book coverPick up your copy of Jane Hamilton's The Book of Ruth at the Circulation Desk and join the group on Wednesday, April 2nd at 6:30 p.m.

The Book of Ruth is a virtuoso performance and that's precisely why it can be excruciating to read. Author Jane Hamilton leads us through the arid life of Ruth Grey, who extracts what small pleasures and graces she can from a tiny Illinois town and the broken people who inhabit it. Ruth's prime tormentor is her mother May, whose husband died in World War II and took her future with him. More poor familial luck has given Ruth a brother who is a math prodigy; Matt sucks up any stray attention like a black hole. Ruth is left to survive on her own resources, which are meager. She struggles along, subsisting on crumbs of affection meted out by her Aunt Sid and, later, her screwed-up husband Ruby. Hamilton has perfect pitch. So perfect that you wince with pain for confused but fundamentally good Ruth as she walks a dead-end path. The book ends with the prospect of redemption, thank goodness--but the tale is nevertheless much more bitter than sweet. (Amazon.com)

Good-Bye Take 'n Make,
Hello Make 'n Take

eggs courtesy of clipartheaven.com4 1/2 years ago, after losing the Young Readers' Room, the Children's Librarian was forced to discontinue the popular, long running Make 'n Take craft program for kids. It was replaced with a similar Take 'n Make program, where children were given craft kits to take home to put together. Now, with the Young Readers' Room open again, we are saying good-bye to the Take 'n Make and welcoming back the Make 'n Take with March's “An Egg-cellent Idea!” craft.

Children of all ages are invited to come to the library March 18th - 22nd to make this egg-cellent project. A craft table will be set up in the Young Readers' Room with all the necessary supplies so kids can make their craft while at the library, and then take it home. Welcome back Make 'n Take, welcome back!

How to Care For Your Library Books

cartoon bookPlease be nice to library books
Don’t tear or fold our pages.
Turn every page at the top—
We want to last for ages!

Don’t lend us out to others—
You might not get us back.
Don’t leave us out for cats or dogs—
They might think we’re a snack!

Never write or draw on us—
We think that’s really mean.
Don’t spill food or drink on us—
Keep our pages clean!

Wash your hands before you read
So you never leave a stain.
And please don’t throw or drop us,
Or leave us in the rain.

If we’re laid facedown when open,
We don’t have too much fun.
It’s best to use a bookmark,
It's easy to make one.

Take special care of library books
So children just like you
Can read us for many years to come
And we’ll still look like new!
--Robyn Squire

Get 'Em While They're Hot!

town reportThat's right, the 2007 Litchfield Town Reports are in, and they are dying to jump off the shelf and go home with you! In this one slim volume you can find out not only how many children were born last year, but how many people were arrested on noise complaints, what the projected school enrollment is for 2008, what the Conservation Commission was up to, plus much, much more. The Town could charge as much as $19.95 for this must-read, but they are giving them to you for FREE. Make sure you pick one up here at the library or over at Town Hall, while supplies last!

Book of the Month Club Reads All Over But the Shoutin' in March

book coverRick Bragg's All Over But the Shoutin' is our featured read for March.

This haunting, harrowing, gloriously moving recollection of a life on the American margin is the story of Rick Bragg, who grew up dirt-poor in northeastern Alabama, seemingly destined for either the cotton mills or the penitentiary, and instead became a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times. It is the story of Bragg's father, a hard-drinking man with a murderous temper and the habit of running out on the people who needed him most. But at the center of this soaring memoir is Bragg's mother, who went eighteen years without a new dress so that her sons could have school clothes and picked other people's cotton so that her children wouldn't have to live on welfare alone. Evoking these lives--and the country that shaped and nourished them--with artistry, honesty, and compassion, Rick Bragg brings home the love and suffering that lie at the heart of every family. The result is unforgettable.

Pick up your copy of this moving memoir at the Circulation Desk.

Trade-In Under Way

library cardI traded in my old paper library card today for the attractive new credit-card style card, and let me tell you, I feel like a million bucks! You can too! Just bring in your drivers license, and fill out a new application at either Circulation Desk. It's a good thing the new card comes with a key tag too, because you're going to want to frame the card itself. That's just how lovely it is! (Do I know how to lay it on thick, or what? But it did make you want to rush in, right?)

Some restrictions apply:
Trade-ins are restricted to patrons with no outstanding fines and fees. Fines and fees must be paid before a new card can be issued.
