All Booked Up Reads Plainsong for January

book coverPlainsong by Ken Haruf is the All Booked Up pick for January.

A stirring meditation on the true nature and necessity of the family. Among the several damaged families in this beautifully cadenced and understated tale is that of Tom Guthrie, a high-school history teacher in small Holt, Colorado, whos left to raise his two young sons, Ike and Bobby, alone when his troubled wife first withdraws from them and then, without explanation, abandons them altogether. Victoria Roubideaux, a high-school senior, is thrown out of her house when her mother discovers shes pregnant. Harold and Raymond McPheron, two aging but self-reliant cattle ranchers, are haunted by their imaginings of what they may have missed in life by electing never to get married, never to strike out on their own. Haruf (Where You Once Belonged, 1989, etc.) believably draws these various incomplete or troubled figures together. Victoria, pretty, insecure, uncertain of her own worth, has allowed herself to be seduced by a weak, spoiled lout who quickly disappears. When her bitter mother locks her out, she turns to Maggie Jones, a compassionate teacher and a neighbor, for help. Maggie places Victoria with the McPheron brothers, an arrangement that Guthrie, a friend of both Maggie and the McPherons, supports. Some of Harufs best passages trace with precision and delicacy the ways in which, gradually, the gentle, the lonely brothers and Victoria begin to adapt to each other and then, over the course of Victoria's pregnancy, to form a resilient family unit. Harold and Raymond's growing affection for Victoria gives her a sense of self-worth, which proves crucial when her vanished (and abusive) boyfriend, comes briefly back into her life. Haruf is equally good at catching the ways in which Tom and his sons must quietly struggle to deal with their differing feelings of loss, guilt, and abandonment. Everyone is struggling here, and it's their decency, and their determination to care for one another, Haruf suggests, that gets them through. A touching work, as honest and precise as the McPheron brothers themselves. (Kirkus)

Copies are available at the Circulation Desk. The group meets January 9th at 6:30 in the library.

Book of the Month Club Reads Blues in the Night for December

book coverPick up your copy of Rochelle Krich's Blues in the Night, our featured novel for December.

In Blues, an unidentified woman in a nightgown is the victim of a hit-and-run accident on Mulholland Drive that leaves her unconscious and seriously injured.

The image of the young woman stumbling along a dark, winding road is one true-crime writer Molly Blume cannot shake. It draws her to a bedside in intensive care, where, before dying, the victim whispers three names: Robbie, Max, and Nina. It's not a smoking gun, but it is sufficient enough to reinforce Molly's gut instinct that there are sinister circumstances behind the assault on Lenore Saunders.

With fearless conviction, Molly asks questions that nobody - including Lenore's mom, her ex-husband, her shrink, or even Molly's LAPD buddy, Detective Connors - wants to answer. Nevertheless, the astute Molly discovers Lenore lived a fractured life, so different from Molly's own secure and loving Orthodox Jewish background. And as a chilling picture of the unfortunate woman begins to take shape, the menace of murders past and present stirs and quickens.

Copies are available for check-out at the Circulation Desk. Then, if you like, join us for online discussion at Aaron's Book of the Month Club.

Happy Birthday Mr. Grinch!

the grinchAccording to Random House Children's Books, the Grinch who stole Christmas celebrated his 50th birthday on December 1st.

In case you've missed this tale, Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, put his thoughts about the true meaning of Christmas into words in How the Grinch Stole Christmas back in 1957. The story introduces us to the Grinch, who concocts a plan to steal Christmas from all the Who's in Whoville to stop them from their infernal celebrating. With the reluctant help of his dog/reindeer Max, the Grinch steals their trees, their presents, their decorations and their feasts. With great aniticipation, he waits for their stunnded silence on Christmas morning, only to hear the Who's sing in celebration as ususal. The Grinch learns there's more to Christmas than he thought. "Maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more." In the end, the Grinch's teeny-tiny heart grows three sizes and he gives back everything he took.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas has sold over 5 million copies in the last 50 years, and has been made into both an animated film and, most recently, a feature film.
