The Magician for Non-Believers...Peter Boie

photo of peter boie Peter Boie, the Magician for Non-Believers, will perform in the LMS cafeteria on Tuesday, July 10th, at 6:30 pm. Peter’s performance is a mix of magic choreographed to music, audience participation, and comedy.

When Peter was 11 years old, he found his first magic book at his local library and it forever changed his life. Now he travels the country performing his art, talking about his library experiences, places he’s visited around the country, magic he’s learned from different parts of the country, and magicians from those parts.

This family event is a terrific connection to our summer reading clubs. Bring your family, bring your friends, and bring a blanket to sit on.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Library, the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, donations from the Byrne Foundation, CHILIS, the Cogswell Benevolent Trust, and community donations.

Author to Take Part in Book Discussion

photo of book
Author Ron McLarty has agreed to talk with our All Booked Up group, via speakerphone, about his first novel, The Memory of Running! Librarian Ann McKillop is very excited to have the author as part of the discussion, a first for her reading group.

McLarty, however, has done this for a number of other reading groups. One member recently had this to say: "BRAVO!!!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed our evening together and Ron's reading of Norma's letter made the whole book come alive for me. I look forward to Ron's new book and I am now a member of his fan club. Many thanks for an enlightening evening!"

About the book: Meet Smithson "Smithy" Ide, an overweight, friendless, chain-smoking, forty-three-year-old drunk who works as a quality control inspector at a toy-action-figure factory in Rhode Island. By all accounts, especially Smithy's own, he's a loser. Then, within one week, Smithy's beloved parents are killed in a car crash, and Smithy learns that his emotionally troubled, long-lost sister, Bethany, has turned up in a morgue in Los Angeles. Unmoored by the loss of his entire family-Smithy had always hoped Bethany might return-he rolls down the driveway of his parents' house on his old Raleigh bicycle into an epic journey that will take him clear across the country. Book of the Month Club Reads The Future Homemakers of America in June

book coverPick up a copy of The Future Homemakers of America by Laurie Graham at the Circulation Desk and join the online discussion on Book Chatter. Discussion will begin in earnest toward the end of the month.

From the Publisher...

Stationed at a U.S. Air Force base in Norfolk, England in 1952, a group of "Yankee wives" are thrown together by nothing more than husbands who patrol the skies keeping the Soviets at bay. They seem to have little in common; some, like Pie Crust Queen Betty Gillis, are content to clip coupons and bake chocolate brownies, while others, like good-time girl Lois Moon, look for a little excitement beyond the perimeter fence. But the women soon discover similarities, from a common fear for their husbands to a desire to help out the war-ravaged British natives. Through marriage and divorce, separations and reunions, the gang will try to hold fast to each other in a story that takes us to the heart of female friendship-and reveals the secret of the perfect Three Color Refrigerator Cake.

Memorial Tree Dedicated

memorial treeThe Litchfield Garden Club dedicated a Japanese maple tree, planted on the library lawn in memory of Cheryl Lewis, in a ceremony held at the library on Sunday. Garden Club member Deb Bois and Women's Club member Pamme Boutselis spoke at the ceremony, emphasising Cheryl's love of gardening, libraries, and community service.

Cheryl, who passed away in December, was a founding member of our Friends of the Library group. She volunteered many hours to library events, and most recently ran the All Booked Up discussion group from July 2002 to July 2005. Her presence in the library, and throughout the community, is greatly missed.
