Light 'n Lively Reads Ella Minnow Pea for February

book cover Join the Light 'n Lively book discussion group on Thursday, February 22nd, at 1:00 p.m. for a chat about Mark Dunn's Ella Minnow Pea. Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk.

From the Publisher
Ella Minnow Pea is an epistolary novel set in the fictional island of Nollop situated off the coast of South Carolina and home to the inventor the pangram The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog. Now deceased, the islanders have erected a monument to honor their hero, but one day a tile with the letter "z" falls from the statue. The leaders interpret the falling tile as a message from beyond the grave and the letter is banned from use. On an island where the residents pride themselves on their love of language, this is seen as a tragedy. They are still reeling from the shock, when another tile falls and then another....Mark Dunn takes us on a journey against time through the eyes of Ella Minnow Pea and her family as they race to find another phrase containing all the letters of the alphabet to save them from being unable to communicate. Eventually, the only letters remaining are LMNOP, when Ella finally discovers the phrase that will save their language.

The Snowball Champions Are...

snowflake

We had quite a snowball fight at the library! There was a three way tie in the Children's division: Danielle L, Maddie F, and Rachel S, all tossed in guesses of 200 snowballs. Kelly B zipped in a guess of 202 in the Teen division, and Mark S threw a 204 in the Adult division. Actual number of snowballs: 215. Great guesses!

Aaron Cutler Memorial Library Trustee's Report

report photo courtesy of hopeeThe Aaron Cutler Memorial Library has been working hard this year to replace staff members who have left. Cheryl Brigham retired this year, and she will be sorely missed, but we wish her well in her retirement.

Vicki will be retiring from the Library as soon as we can hire a replacement Director. Vicki’s shoes will be hard to fill, and we have only received a few resumes trickling in that are potentials for her replacement. Vicki is still working most of her regular hours, along with Alex Robinson picking up a few for her. Both of their help is greatly appreciated.

Our Library Trustee Board has suffered some losses this year, with our Chair Tom Kuegler, and our Treasurer Michele Parzych stepping down, due to moving out of town. This leaves our board short two members, and at election time, there may potentially be three spots available to fill.

The drainage project was completed this summer. J. G. E. Construction did a great job of installing a new gravity drainage system and attaching it to our perimeter drain. The library staff was very patient during this construction, and everything went very smoothly. Thanks go out to Deb Bois for removing and storing the flowers in the front of the library while this project took place. She did a lovely job replacing all the plants and flowers once the project was completed.

The Trustees next project will be to finally complete the Young Readers Room, so that the full potential of the library can finally be met for our patrons. We are working on getting this project started, hopefully early in the New Year. We appreciate the patience of all our patrons, and hope that they are aware that they can get books through Inter Library Loan in our library.

In closing, I would like to thank the whole staff at the library, and my fellow board members for all their hard work. Without them the library would not have a chance to move forward. We hope to see all of you at the library.

Respectfully submitted,
Diane Jerry, Chairman
Library Board of Trustees

How About a Snowball Fight?

snowflake "How can we have a snowball fight when there's no snow," you ask? Well, it just so happens that we have a whole jar of "snowballs" sitting at the Circulation Desk.

You can win this snowball fight by guessing how many snowballs we've collected. The closest guess without going over wins. This contest is open to adults, teens, and children, and prizes will be awarded in all three categories.

So put on your mittens and stop in to make a guess! Contest ends January 20th, or when the snowballs melt, whichever comes first.

2006 Director's Report for the Town Report

Another year has come to an end, and I have been called upon to write a summary for the Litchfield Town Report:

Aaron Cutler Memorial Library’s 2006 Director’s Report
At the time of this report, the Florence C. Center Young Readers’ Room, on the lower level of the library, has been closed for three and a half years due to water intrusion. We were thrilled when the warrant article to reconstruct this room, as well as correct miscellaneous surface flow problems, passed in March. This is the second of a two-part plan to get the room reopened. The first part was completed in August when J.G.E. installed a new gravity drainage system, and storm basin, to alleviate our ground water woes. The results of this project have been monitored since completion, and part two, the reconstruction, is now being re-bid.

Light 'n Lively Reads Driving Mr. Albert for January

book coverJoin our Light 'n Lively book group on Thursday, January 25th, at 1:00 p.m. and discuss Michael Paterniti's Driving Mr. Albert: A Trip Across America with Einstein's Brain. Einstein's brain? That's right folks.

"Albert Einstein's brain floats in formaldehyde in a Tupperware® bowl in a gray duffel bag in the trunk of a Buick Skylark barreling across America. Driving the car is Michael Paterniti, a young journalist from Maine. Sitting next to him is an eighty-four-year-old pathologist named Thomas Harvey who performed the autopsy on Einstein in 1955—and simply removed the brain and took it home. And kept it for over forty years." (Booknotes)

Don't miss this one! Pick up your copy at the Circulation Desk and find out what happens.
