Light 'n Lively Reading The Best Short Stories of O. Henry for November
Book Description (Amazon.com)
The more than 600 stories written by O. Henry provided an embarrassment of riches for the compilers of this volume. The final selection of the thirty-eight stories in this collection offers for the reader's delight those tales honored almost unanimously by anthologists and those that represent, in variety and balance, the best work of America's favorite storyteller. They are tales in his most mellow, humorous, and ironic moods. They give the full range and flavor of the man born William Sydney Porter but known throughout the world as O. Henry, one of the great masters of the short story.
About the Author (Wikipedia)
O. Henry was the pen name of American writer William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862–June 5, 1910), whose clever use of twist endings in his stories popularized the term "O. Henry Ending". Read more...

Read Criss Cross for November's Teen Book Group
The Teen Book Group is reading Newbery Medal winner Criss Cross for November. Written by Lynne Rae Perkins, Criss Cross "captures the wistful romantic yearnings of three friends on the brink of adolescence. There's Debbie, who makes a wish that 'something different would happen. Something good. To me.' There's Hector, who hears a guitarist and quite suddenly feels inspired to learn how to play the instrument. Then there's mechanical-minded Lenny who feels himself drawn to Debbie. The characters spend spring and summer wandering about their neighborhood, 'criss crossing' paths, expanding their perspectives on the world while sensing that life will lead them to some exciting new experiences." (Publishers Weekly, vol 252, issue 43, p58) Click here to read the first chapter.
Books are available for check-out at the Circulation Desk. The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15th.
