This Week @ Your Library...

banned books week poster
It's Banned Books Week
Did you know more than a book a day faces removal from free and open public access in U.S. schools and libraries every year? According to the American Library Association, there have been more than 8,700 attempts to ban books since they began electronically compiling and publishing information on book challenges in 1990. Challenged books include titles such as the Bible, John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men and Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach.

Celebrate Banned Books Week by borrowing a challenged book from the library.

All Booked Up to Read The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down in October

book cover
Lia's doctors ascribed her seizures to the misfiring of her cerebral neurons; her parents called her illness, qaug dab peg--the spirit catches you and you fall down--and ascribed it to the wandering of her soul. The doctors prescribed anticonvulsants; her parents preferred animal sacrifices. (Amazon.com)

Pick up your copy of this facinating book, and join us on October 4th to discuss the real-life struggle between Western doctors and an immigrant Hmong family, both trying to do what's best for three-month-old Lia Lee.
