Online Book Clubs from
the Friends of ACML!

The Friends of the Library are sponsoring an Online Book Club program! Here's how it works: Each day you are e-mailed a 5-minute portion from the selected book. During the week you can read 2-3 chapters and decide if you want to request the book from the library. Every Monday a new book is started. The 11 available clubs include:

fiction logoThe beauty of fiction lies in the privilege to live life through another’s skin, temporarily escaping our world yet safely re-entering reality again after the read. Our fiction book club lets you experiment with authors new and old; in worlds yet untested and untried.

mystery logo The rich suspense, intertwined characters, thickened plot, and nearly missed clues will keep you coming back for more. Each week you’ll enjoy a new and exciting mystery by famous and just-getting-started authors.

Imagination fantastic, wonder and otherworlds, time travel and space continuums—you’ll find rich samples each week delivered direct via yesterday’s electronic fantasy medium (otherwise known today as email).

Come on, don’t be afraid. Ghosts…ghouls…dark things eerie and evil. Come sample a daily horror in our weekly picks—chosen with help from the Horror Writer’s Association. Horror books are featured every other week.

romance logo Candlelight… newfound passion… walks in the rain… a broken heart… rekindled romance… and of course, love—you’ll find these and many more tender ingredients in our weekly menu of Romance Books.

good news logoGood news! Enjoy our thought-provoking family-friendly daily selections that inspire, make joyful, occasionally sadden, relate to everyman, and cause one to reflect on our place in the cosmos. Join the club today.

non-fiction logo Join us each week for nonfiction at its finest. We’ll taste a bit of politics, Americana, culture, people, places, philosophies, history, and more. This is real life as portrayed yesterday, lived today, and dreamed tomorrow.

business logo Read well; stay sharp; sell smart; market bigger; service better. Clean fresh, new ideas through our weekly Business Book Club picks. Join now.

prepub logo By special invitation only, our book club readers are invited to a sneak preview of hot-off-the-press books. Actually these books aren’t even off the press yet! Every other week we’ll send an Advanced Reading Copy from a book not yet published. After all, you’re an insider!

audio logo Sit back, relax, listen, and enjoy a daily dose of well-read books from a veritable garden of selections. Every other week you’ll hear excerpts from fiction, nonfiction, self-help, business, and more.

teen logo Hand-picked just for our younger audience—gripping mysteries, wildly hilarious comedies, true adventures, mystical science fiction—you won’t believe the variety! And introducing special guest hosts—selected teens from all over the planet share their insights in your daily read.

There's even a Book Forum to contribute to...

Do you enjoy talking about books? If so, come on over to our book forum. Each week we post the books we are reading and hundreds of people share their comments.

Oprah's Latest Pick

Elie Wiesel's Night is the latest selection in Oprah Winfrey's book club.

Night, an autobiographical novel, is a "terrifying account of the Nazi death camp horror that turns a young Jewish boy into an agonized witness to the death of his family...the death of his innocence...and the death of his God. Penetrating and powerful, as personal as The Diary Of Anne Frank, Night awakens the shocking memory of evil at its absolute and carries with it the unforgettable message that this horror must never be allowed to happen again. Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley's photographed his first snowflake today, Hanuary 15th, in 1885. From the time he was a little boy in Vermont, Wilson saw snowflakes as small miracles, and through patience and determination, he devised a way to photograph their unique beauty. He published the first book of snow crystal photgraphs, Snow Crystals, in 1931. This book has been reprinted by Dover under the title Snowflakes in Photographs and is available through interlibrary loan.

Others have picked up where "Snowflake" Bentley left off. There are some amazing photographs on SnowCrystals.com, as well instructions on how to take your own pics.

If paper and scissor snowflakes are more your speed, try the virtual snowflake designer at Make-a-Flake. The trick is to click, not drag, your scissors from point to point. You'll know your scissors are snipping when the indicator changes from red to green. When your snowflake is finished, you can download it, print it, email it to a friend, or go to the gallery and look for it there.

To learn more about Wilson Bentley, reserve Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin.

The Time Traveler's Wife

laundered moneyHave you ever wished you could time travel? Maybe you'd like to go back in time and change the dumb things you've done. Or maybe you'd like to go forward in time and see how your life turns out. But would you like to time travel if you had no control over where and when you went, and you always arrived there naked? This type of time travel presents a bit of a problem for Henry De Tamble and his wife Clare in The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, All Booked Up's choice for February 1st.

"On the surface, Henry and Clare Detamble are a normal couple living in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. Henry works at the Newberry Library and Clare creates abstract paper art, but the cruel reality is that Henry is a prisoner of time. It sweeps him back and forth at its leisure, from the present to the past, with no regard for where he is or what he is doing. It drops him naked and vulnerable into another decade, wearing an age-appropriate face. In fact, it's not unusual for Henry to run into the other Henry and help him out of a jam. Sound unusual? Imagine Clare Detamble's astonishment at seeing Henry dropped stark naked into her parents' meadow when she was only six. Though, of course, until she came of age, Henry was always the perfect gentleman and gave young Clare nothing but his friendship as he dropped in and out of her life. It's no wonder that the film rights to this hip and urban love story have been acquired."--Booklist, Elsa Gaztambide © American Library Association.

New Year's Resolution Week

January 1-7 is New Year's Resolution Week, that time of year when people make plans for a fresh start, set goals for themselves, and renew commitments to themselves, their families, and their jobs. The top 10 most common New Year's resolutions, according to The Goals Guy, are: lose weight; stop smoking; stick to a budget; save or earn more money; find a better job; become more organized; exercise more; be more patient at work/with others; eat better; and become a better person. If you're serious about New Year's resolutions, you might want to check out their website and make use of the Resolution Contract. On the other hand, if you're known for never keeping your New Year's resolutions, you might want to mark your calendar for "Ditch Your Resolution Day" on January 17th and be done with them in an orderly fashion.
