Harry Potter Protects Kids!

Not only is Harry Potter doing his part to keep the wizarding world safe from the likes of Voldemort, he's also keeping kids in the muggle world safe as well. According to an article written by Rob Stein in yesterday's Union Leader, Stephen Gwilym of the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England and his colleagues tracked how many kids age 7 to 15 visited the emergency room on the weekends of Rowling’s last two book releases, and compared them with other summer weekends in 2003-2005. What did they find? Half the usual number of injuries. British researchers did note keeping children involved in reading marathons could have repercussions as well. Potential problems "would include an unpredictable increase in childhood obesity, rickets, and loss of cardiovascular fitness." Sounds like Harry will need to whip up an antidote in potions class.

We Have Winners!

All the guesses have been read for December's Holiday Guessing Contest.

Patrons were asked to guess how many green, red, and white pom-poms were in a jar. Guesses ranged from 8 to 300. The actual number of pom-poms in the jar: 107.

The winners are:

  • Cecile Bonvouloir (adult), with a guess of 100, wins The Christmas Blessing CD audio book.

  • Emily Aniskovich (teen), with a guess of 97, wins a Sculpey Snowman Oven Bake Clay Kit .

  • Madison Corbeil (child), with a guess of 105, wins a 3-D Foamies Winter Door Hanger Kit .

  • Jarrod MacDonald (child), also with a guess of 105, wins a Christmas Activity Book, pencil, and stickers.

And yes, Emily is employed by the library, and yes, Emily was asked to count the pom-poms for the contest, but we did observe her enter her guess (which I read at the time) before she did the count.

Congratulations to all our winners!

All Booked Up
Read it for January...

Dancer
January's book club selection is Dancer by Colum McCann. Pick up a copy at the Main Desk and join All Booked Up on Wednesday, January 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the library. New folks are always welcome, and so are late arrivals.

From Amazon.com:
Book Description
A Russian peasant who became an international legend, a Cold War exile who inspired millions, an artist whose name stood for genius, sex, and excess-the magnificence of Rudolf Nureyev's life and work are known, but now Colum McCann, in his most daring novel yet, reinvents this erotically charged figure through the light he cast on those who knew him. Taking his inspiration from the biographical facts, McCann tells the story through a chorus of voices: there is Anna Vasileva, Rudi's first ballet teacher, who rescues her protégé from the stunted life of his town; Yulia, whose sexual and artistic ambitions are thwarted by her Soviet-sanctioned marriage; and Victor, the Venezuelan hustler, who reveals the lurid underside of the gay celebrity set. Spanning four decades and many worlds, from the horrors of Stalingrad to the wild abandon of New York in the eighties, Dancer is peopled by a large cast of characters, obscure and famous: doormen and shoemakers, Margot Fonteyn and John Lennon. And at the heart of the spectacle stands the artist himself, willful, lustful, and driven by a never-to-be-met need for perfection. In ecstatic prose, McCann evokes the distinct consciousness of the man and the glittering reflection of the myth. The result is a monumental story of love, art, and exile.

Lost and Found--What Would You Have Done?

laundered money I recently greeted a long-time patron as she came in the door, and she told me she had found something in a book she'd just checked out. She began to remove an envelope from her purse with an odd expression on her face, and all I could think was, "Please Lord, don't let it be inappropriate photographs." Well, it wasn't. As I cautiously opened the enveloped I saw a $10 bill. Whew! And another $10 bill. She said to keep looking, so I did. They were followed by another $10 bill and then six $100 bills. Whoa! $630 mistakenly left in a book--someone must be frantic.

We determined who had just returned the book and that, combined with some markings on the envelope, led us to the rightful owner. But I gotta ask--if you found $630 cash in a book, would you turn it in? That's the latest poll question located to the left of this post in the sidebar, so do some soul searching and weigh in!

Kudos to the very honest woman who did indeed turn the money in. Thanks to her honesty, no one's electricity had to be shut off!

Limited Catalog Access Through the State Library!

As you know, the library does not currently have its own online catalog. However, nearly all materials purchased since 1998 are available through the State Library Catalog known as NHU-PAC (New Hampshire Union Patron Access Catalog).

To search in NHU-PAC:

  1. Click on Library Catalog under Library Servicesin the sidebar.

  2. Enter your search under the Advanced Searching tab using the "location = hray" limit under the "Refine your search" option. For example, if you search for the book Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, your search will return 2 items from our collection: a book and an audio book.

  3. To further refine your search, you can limit the format to the "text material" qualifier or the "non-musical sound recordings" qualifier. Each of these searches will return a single item.

If you find the item you are looking for and would like to reserve it for pick-up, simply fill out the online reserve form and we will notify you when it becomes available for loan.

If you do not find the item you are looking for, you can search the statewide catalog by removing the hray location qualifier. If you find the item with this search, simply fill out the online interlibrary loan form and we will request the item for you from another library, and notify you when it comes in.

Give NHU-PAC a try and let us know if you have any questions. Happy Searching!
