Speaking of the Flume Award...

group of teenagers The Flume Award is the newest statewide book award geared to teens in grades 9-12. In April, teens will be asked to vote for their favorite title from the first list of nominees. The winning title, and its author, will be the first Flume Award winner. The are thirteen titles on the list and we hope that you will read as many as possible so that you can make an informed decision.

Titles for the 2006 Flume Award were nominated by teens around the state. The full list was then whittled down by a committee of school and public librarians to just 13 titles from a variety of genres and reading levels.

Nominations are currently being taken for the 2007 award. If you've read a particularly good fiction of non-fiction book with a publication date of 2003-2005, you can nominate it at the library or by e-mail. Nominations will be taken through December 15th.

And if that isn't enough, there is a contest going on to create the Flume Award logo. The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. Entries are due November 28th. Stop by the library or click here for more details.

Support Teen Reading in New Hampshire

Barnes & Noble stores in Nashua, Manchester, Salem and Newington have teamed up with New Hampshire libraries to benefit teen reading initiatives in the state. With a voucher from the library, 20-25% of any purchases made at these stores on December 2nd and 3rd will be donated to the New Hampshire Library Association's Young Adult Section to support their activities with teens and the promotion of the newly created Flume Award. Promotional activities, such as author visits, crafts, and story times, will take place at each Barnes & Noble store on those days. So get out your holiday gift giving list, print one or more vouchers or pick them up at the library, and get out and shop on December 2nd and 3rd!

And because we wouldn't want anyone to think the raffle was rigged, special thanks go to patron Meghan F. for picking the winning ticket.

Let There Be Light!

Anyone who has been in this week has been treated to much improved lighting thanks to the death-defying feats of library trustee Sheila Huston and her assistant Alex Robinson. Sheila and Alex were in over the weekend and replaced the 100 watt bulbs with 150's and it's made quite a difference.

Hats off to Shelia for climbing the 14 foot ladder, and wrestling the giant globes off the fixtures! I know there had to be some leaning involved, as the lights are not conveniently located. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by staff and patrons.

Floats on Parade Contest

shoebox float
Hey kids! Looking for something fun to do? Why not make a float for our holiday parade? All you need is an empty shoe box for the base of your float, a few things from around the house, and your imagination! Your float can show off people, characters, animals, or a cool scene. You can use any materials you like--toys, figurines, beads, sequins, glitter, paper, paint, etc. etc.

Bring your fabulous float to the library as soon as it's ready so we can show it off-- just make sure it's here by 8:00p.m. on Tuesday, November 22nd. Floats will be judged in 3 age categories: 3-5, 6-8, and 9-11. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, November 23rd, and floats can be picked up starting December 6th. (We want to keep them to display for a little while.)

Heard of BookCrossing?

Their website provides this definition:
bookcrossing
n. the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.

(added to the
Concise Oxford English Dictionary in August 2004)

It's like Where'sGeorge for books. BookCrossing is made up of 416,000+ members, who "love their books enough to let them go--into the wild--to be found by others." Promoting the 3 R's--Read, Register, and Release--the site allows you to track the books you've released, check-in the BookCrossing books you've caught, swap ideas with other members, and have fun doing it.

Out of curiosity, I decided to Go Hunting in the USA and found, to my amazement, that 3 books have been released in Litchfield: one at Wilson Farms, and two at Aaron Cutler Memorial Library! The journal notes for Doctor Zhivago indicate it, and Flock, were added to our 24/7 Porch Sale offerings on/or about October 5th by a native of Nashua, and have yet to be reported as found. If you happened to pick up one of these books at our sale, please let BookCrossing know you found it. Look for the identification number near the inside cover--they'd love to hear from you. Of course there's a chance that we still have them. If I find them, I'll let you know.

If joining the ranks of BookCrossers sounds like fun, grab a few books off your shelf (not ours!) and get started!
